We have to have three slip fielders ready. Kohli is not a good slip fielder.

Rahane is our number one. So if we ever have 3 fielders, he will be automatic third choice for now until we have Rahul regularly stand there or someone like Vijay or even Pujara.

Among all, I don't know how good Pujara will be at slip to the seamers We need Our bats to be at slip. Can't expect Yadav or Shami, or any other bowler to stand at slip and squat and tire their body so they can't bowl later.

Has to be someone from top 7 bats. So Rahane is automatic choice and the two others have to be players who play regularly. This is where Rahul needs to step up and start playing regularly for India so he can be tried as a slip fielder. Recently our top order has been changing a lot and that has made the the middle order bats to be used for slip fielding only. One or both openers could be developed for slip catching.

Not just slip, Kohli doesn't has technique and patience to be any type of close in fielder. Problem is that there are very few fielding positions available for Kohli as he is the captain. He has to be inside 30 yards circle. He can't be part of 3 slips, WK and bowler and 3 out-fielders. That eliminates 8 positions for him. If there is a plan for more fielders near the batsman, it becomes very diffcult to hide him considering that he has remain close to action too.

It's time for coach to assess the real value of players.

Dhawan and Kohli may score average 40-45 runs in an inning and 75-80 runs in a match, but if they drop catches at this rate, then their actual value to the team might be way lower.

Indian team is consistently losing 40-50 runs or more because of them, especially Kohli who scores 45 runs, but probably costs the team 15-20 on avg in inning.

Shami to Karunaratne, FOUR, edged. Through. Between keeper and Pujara at first slip. The in-ducker from Shami, Karunaratne left the bat hanging outside off and the thick outside off flew low to Saha's left. The keeper might have been wrong footed initially and that could have contributed to the delayed reaction

Vote in the Poll

Can’t believe so many catches dropped by Kohli, this only upto March 2017

have to feel sorry for Yadav

For Ashwin and Jadeja, any dropped catches off their bowling, they probably got the wicket latter on, based on the humongous number of overs they bowl

Mohammed Shami to Tharanga, no run, Dropped by Kohli at second slip! Straightforward chance. This is an excellent ball. Good length, angled in on off, forces Tharanga to play. Then cunningly straightens a touch and grazes the outside edge. Kohli goes with both hands and shells it. Pops in and pops out. He vents out his frustration by slapping the ground

Kohli 1, Shami 1.

2nd test

Jadeja to Dilruwan Perera, FOUR, if there is one thing that has made the Indians look mediocre it is their slip fielding. Once again the two men in the cordon have been bisected to perfection. Flighted ball and Dilruwan Perera went for the drive. Thick edge and Kohli's left hand was nowhere as fast as his running is. Got finger tips

Kohli 2, Shami 1, Jadeja 1

Jadeja to Karunaratne, no run, chance and Rahul has dropped it. Went with hard hands and shells it, RJ doesn't look too thrilled. This was tossed up just outside off, Karunaratne was looking to turn it towards the on-side, went off the face of the bat, straight in and out of KL's hands. Not a tough chance, should have been taken and KL knows it

Kohli 2, Rahul 1, Shami 1, Jadeja 2

Ashwin to Kusal Mendis, no run, dropped! Dhawan at mid-on fails to clutch that. That was dragged away with the turn off the inside half of the bat and it was dipping on the fielder, who failed to take it inches off the ground. Took it a bit casually it seems

Kohli 2, Rahul 1, Dhawan 1

Shami 1, Jadeja 2, Ashwin 1

Jadeja to Mathews, no run, chance and Kohli has grassed it, some luck for Mathews. Lovely delivery from RJ, he shortened his length and got it to drift across the right-hander, the angle made Mathews push at that, gets a thick edge, to the left of gully. The ball was travelling and Kohli went one-handed to his left, hit his wrists and popped out

Kohli 3, Rahul 1, Dhawan 1

Shami 1, Jadeja 3, Ashwin 1

U Yadav to Thirimanne, no run, Dhawan drops a dolly at 1st slip. Umesh gets the ball to hold its line in the corridor outside off. An edge as Thirimanne stands back and prods an edge slightly to Dhawan's right. He was there with a slight shuffle but it just hits his palms and pops out. In and out

Kohli 3, Rahul 1, Dhawan 2

Shami 1, Jadeja 3, Ashwin 1, Yadav 1

Ashwin to Karunaratne, 2 runs, that's a chance and Pujara has missed it. It was a good effort, but he didn't time his jump properly, burst through his hands and rolled away towards long-on. Frustration was the key here, Karunaratne has been kept quiet, this one was given more air, Karunaratne saw an opportunity to score, jumped out of the crease, didn't get anywhere close to the ball, went through with the lofted on-drive and dragged it towards mid-on

Kohli 3, Rahul 1, Dhawan 2, Pujara 1

Shami 1, Jadeja 3, Ashwin 2, Yadav 1

Ishant to Lakmal, no run, Ishant puts down a return catch! That wasn't a tough one. Seam-up delivery that swung away a bit and Lakmal pushes hard at it. Gets it off the cue end and the ball spoons back to the the bowler. Ishant, bends low in his followthrough, can't latch onto it. In and out

Kohli 3, Rahul 1, Dhawan 2, Pujara 1, Ishant 1

Shami 1, Jadeja 3, Ashwin 2, Yadav 1, Ishant 1

81.1

Ishant to Mathews, 1 run, dropped! It is that jinxed second slip position. Dhawan dropped it there. Kohli dropped it there and now Rohit joins the list. A sitter. Ishant is not a happy man. Back of a length and outside off, hint of away movement, Mathews is rooted to the crease as he flays away from the body, the outside edge flies to the right of Rohit and he parries it away. Kohli has replaced Pujara at first slip and Rohit has taken Kohli's position. Lots of chopping and changing, no consistency is costing India

76.4

Jadeja to Mathews, FOUR, edged and through Saha's legs. That was a top delivery from Jadeja. Fires it in on middle and the ball turns just enough, Mathews was playing for the angle and got his pad away, brings his bat across just in time and the outside edge nutmegs Saha. Had he not got bat, that ball was crashing into off-stump. Saha also could have stayed low and anticipated

9.3

Ishant to Mathews, no run, dropped by Kohli! Dhawan's no longer at second slip after that previous drop, but his replacement - the Indian skipper - has put down a sitter too. Back of length, nipping away to take a genuine edge, goes at a comfortable height to the left of Kohli, but it pops out of his palms. He's not known to have the safest hands there, but this should definitely have been taken

6.6

Shami to Dilruwan Perera, no run, the edge was headed straight to first slip, before Dhawan butted in from second slip and made a complete hash of it. Not only that, the ball pops out and rolls onto the helmet to concede five penalty runs too. Pitched up outside off, inviting a flashy drive from Perera and the ball travels quickly off the edge. Bursts through Dhawan's palms

Kohli 4, Rahul 1, Dhawan 3, Pujara 1, Ishant 1, Rohit 1, Saha 1

Shami 2, Jadeja 4, Ashwin 2, Yadav 1, Ishant 3

There was one more when ball went between slip and keeper.

Final numbers till now

Kohli 4, Rahul 1, Dhawan 3, Pujara 1, Ishant 1, Rohit 1, Saha 2

Shami 3, Jadeja 4, Ashwin 2, Yadav 1, Ishant 3

Jadeja to Perera, FOUR, dropped - only because he got a hand to it. Really tough chance, and it ends up on the conscience of Kohli at gully. Jadeja lures the batsman into an on-the-up drive and Perera obliges. The ball comes off the edge, has decent pace behind it, he he has very little time to react. Gets one hand to it, but the problem perhaps is his first step, moving to his right.

Probably bar is very low for Indian team . While fielders are suppose to take great ones sometimes, our expectation is limited to regular ones.

Kohli can field at deep midwicket like he does in limited overs cricket....apparently he is a super expert in that position according to cricketics.

I won’t be surprised, seems to get a lot of practice there.

Unfortunately that's not an option. He is captain and he has to stay close to the action.
