Aussies have managed to compete in alien conditions of India on pitches which were heavily tailored to favor the home team. They came really close to win the 2nd test and India was quite lucky to get away there. If they could get the service of their main bowler Starc throughout the series, reasult could've been quite different. Now Compare the performance of Australia with india's recent performance in alien conditions of NZ and Australia where they weren't just defeated, they were beaten mercilessly. This is why Australia's failure is being referred as successfull failure. They have been defeated but they didn't go down without a fight. As a bd fan it must be pretty easy for you to relate to successful failures Forever Indian, Sidhoni, TheWall and 1 other 4
Forever Indian Posted March 30, 2017 Posted March 30, 2017 Aus were expected to be whopped 4-0 by everyone not going by the name of Glenn McGrath. So now that that they did well in 2 tests, they are celebrating that they played well above their own expectations.

Does this signal a change in attitude? I find the current lot of Australian cricketers and most of their support cast to be mentally weak. Even before the series started, they were preparing excuses for a loss by blaming the pitches that they were supposed to play on. It was like they had already accepted defeat and thinking about a way out. It was because of this, that I was confident of an Indian win even after we went down 0-1 in the series. I remember the Australian teams of the late '90s and early '00s calling India the final frontier, which they wanted to overcome at any cost. I really hope that the current Indian team just looks to win every away test series and not be happy with a well fought loss. This team has the mindset and ability to win and they should not be happy with anything less.
Sandeep99 Posted March 30, 2017 Posted March 30, 2017 I remember how Australians downplayed and discredited Kohli's, Bijay's and Rahane's innings down under when India went on to lose the series. Now they're praising Smith like it's the end of the world. Bunch of assh*les and hypocrites. sandeep and Gollum 2

Nah, I used to follow Australian media and supporters very closely during that time. They always downplayed our good innings as they apparently didn't yield the results. Wonder what they're now saying about Smith and his useless innings..
amits Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 Australia played better than what everyone expected. Before the series started, everyone expected them to lose 4-0 or 3-0, but they managed to win the 1st test and were in a good position to win the 2nd test too before that collapse 2-1 is better than 4-0 or 3-0 anyday and is like a success for Australia. Many Indian fans were disappointed as well that Kohli's unbeaten record ended in this series TheWall and sarchasm 2
MK55 Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 if you've set a target, plan and execute most things in the manner you've wanted and then fail to accomplish it by a small margin, then would be better to term it 'Successful Failure'. Makes it easier for most people to stay positive and look forward. More importantly you yourself could be callous or choose to get motivated by other ways but by not calling it an abject failure, you avoid the risk of alienating the team members who may have strived hard. Well enough of this gibberish, if we look at the Australian teams of the past, a 2-1 result would have been considered a less successful failure. So certainly there's been a drop in expectations. Don't blame it since Australia and most other sides these days are mediocre when touring overseas. Also, winning here has become even more difficult not that we've got a more balanced bowling attack that doesn't just rely upon spin.
randomGuy Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 They lost 3-0 to sl (if I am not wrong) and India is a lot better than sl. Hence the low expectations.

This Aussie team was a different and a better one than the one which lost ti SL and SA. I would back this Aussie team to beat both SL and SA the way they did beat SA in the 3rd Test after the revamp. One other factor in the closeness of the series was the long home season where India literally were the walking wounded. 13 Tests in a matter of 3-4 months in a home season is simply too much workload and hopefully BCCI learns from the experience. Zero_Unit Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 Successful failure = When you cheat in an exam and get an A but in that process you learned nothing. Hence successful failure from my own experience Gollum 1
bharat297 Posted April 7, 2017 Posted April 7, 2017 (edited) I would say this series is more of a success for Australia than India, given that Australia took a fairly young and inexperienced squad to the toughest overseas tour in world cricket and guys like Renshaw, Handscomb, Cummins and O'Keefe really stood up and played very well. For half of the side, it was their first tour of India (Renshaw, Handcomb, S.Marsh, O'Keefe, Hazelwood and Cummins) and they went close to winning the series. It's still a series loss but the point is Australia performed much better in India this series, than India have performed in Australia for the last few tours. The scary part for India is that when they tour Australia next, if this Australian side is fully fit, with a pace bowling attack of Starc, Hazelwood, Cummins and potentially Pattinson too, India are going to get absolutely slaughtered. India really only have 1 quality pace bowler in Umesh to take on their overseas tours. Shami is ok but he's not in the Starc, Hazelwood league. Edited April 7, 2017 by bharat297
GoodEnough Posted April 7, 2017 Posted April 7, 2017 One word for successful failure = Ask David Warner. Your tricky question I think, because Successive failure and Successful failure are two sides of coin but basically same meaning.Ashok Dinda I think Successful failure who gave away 26 in last OVER IPL TWICE, plus Record breaking 30 yesterday
mishra Posted April 7, 2017 Posted April 7, 2017 Last 5 seasons we finished bottom of league. This season, almost Same players won the trophy and played for trophy between Champions of various towns. We were knocked out in first game but still felt good a week later. Successfull and then Failure
