Can someone please explain to me what a 'SUCCESSFUL FAILURE' is?

Can someone please explain this to me?

 

 

 

I mean, i was always under the impression that a failure is...well, a failure.

 

In fact, a failure, by its literal definition, is a result that ISN'T successful. So does the word mean something else in Austraya? They still speak English there, right?

 

We're talking about a team that lost yet another series in the subcontinent, for the one thousandth time. They couldn't take any games past the 4th day, for the one thousandth time. They collapsed in crucial moments yet again, for the one thousandth time. Their bowlers failed to take 20 wickets when it mattered, yet again, for the one thousandth time. A country that has won absolutely fxxx ALL in the subcontinent for 100+ years played to its reputation, for the one thousandth time.

 

BUT this is still being characterized as 'successful'. Is Austrayan cricket truly lacking in ambition? Do they have an inferiority complex? Why are they stil victimising themselves? This isn't an associate country, they have been playing cricket for 120 years.

 

Imagine the reaction if India lost a series away and said it was a SUCCESSFUL FAILURE, lol. The media and public would never let it go (and rightfully so). In fact, our cricket public still doesn't rate players as  truly 'great' unless they perform away from home (as they should). yet in Austrayya, this has become the mainstream opinion. you can't get it off the square and win 1 series in 13 years, its no big deal, it was a successful failure; we're successful even in failure.

 

No wonder they are focusing on what's being said off the field, they have to deflect attention form their appalling track record of SUCCESSFUL FAILURES in asia.

 

Once the made-up controversies die down, I think this is the one and only takeaway from this test series: A country that was once ALL ABOUT WINNING and doing WHATEVER IT TAKES TO WIN has finally sunk into the abyss and accepted its place as a small time, inferior cricket nation.

This is the standard of world cricket at the moment,teams are usually happy if only they compete away from the comfort of their home conditions.Like many,most AUS ex cricketers also thought it would be a 4-0 debacle,so anything else is an upgrade.Anyways,AUS won their first test in Ind after 13 years & drew a test after 9 years,so let them be gratified with their little achievement.

You're missing the point.

 

India's tour was a failure. Simple as that. Sure, they can blame below-average umpiring, but a failure is still a failure.

 

And for the sake of argument, lets say India calls that a 'successful' series, the point is: isn't Austraya supposed to be above that kind of small-time mentality? Does this signal a change in attitude?

India didn't win a test in Australia, New Zealand or South Africa. They competed much better than India did in those countries (or England). Of course they will be happy at their performance after outperforming South Africa, New Zealand and England.

 

If India had won a test in those countries, we would have been over the moon and rightfully so.

Aussies won a test here after 13 long years and ran us very close. It was a successful failure for them because they can build on this next time to win in Lanka, UAE.

In any case, take away Steve Smith's runs and the scoreline probably reads 3-0 or 4-0.   Its not as if the team as a whole did well.  Only thing you could honestly say is that they bowled well, on bowler friendly pitches.  Still gave up 600 in Ranchi.
