N Srinivasan, former ICC and BCCI President, and the owner of IPL franchise, Chennai Super Kings, has emphatically said that the Chennai-based team will be back in the IPL in 2018. The former ICC boss was speaking at Madras Advertising Club’s annual awards function where he said that former India captain, MS Dhoni, would lead the side once more when their suspension is lifted in 2018.

“M.S. Dhoni, wearing yellow and leading the CSK team onto the ground. Come 2018, there is every possibility of it happening. We will be back with a bang,” said Srinivasan in his keynote address, as quoted from Sportstar Live.

How will CSK and Rajasthan Royals' re-reinstatement work? Will both the franchises be back in 2018? What happens to Gujarat and Pune franchises? Will there be 10 franchises next year? Also, how will CSK and Rajasthan Royal get players? Will they get the same team which they had before they were banned or will they effectively be treated as a new franchise with no players carried over from earlier?

Pune and Gujarat might not exist as it was just a 2-year arrangement and the owners knew it. There will be fresh bidding for all teams.

1.Yes both CSK and RR will be back for 2018.They will be the same franchises. They were suspended for two years not terminated.

2.GL and Pune were auctioned only for two years with intention to scrap them when CSK and RR return.

Anurag Thakur also said a year back IPL wants to stick with 8 teams format for now .Because IPL felt 10 teams are too hectic to schedule within the window and dilutes the quality.

3.As for players all of them are to be reauctioned as it's the 10th year and all the contracts will expire.

Obviously some option will be given to retain some star players like in the past.

4.Most likely from Pune and Gujarat team players

Thanks for the clarification @rkt.india, @BeautifulGame and @sarchasm. Gujarat and Pune created for just two seasons simply doesn't make sense. There has to be some sort of continuity. You can't create, suspend and move franchises this often as it takes time to build franchise base and brand loyalty. IPL has barely been around for 10 years and already we would've seen 3 franchises been suspended or discontinued - Kochi, CSK and Rajasthan.

Plus we have had two franchises created temporarily simply for 2 years - Gujarat and Pune - which may be discontinued moving forward. That would bring a total of 5 teams/franchises disbanded/suspended in 10 years for a league which has 8 or 9 teams! That's too much flux and not how you build a league and brand loyalty. Hope things are done differently moving forward else IPL risk losing credibility.

On a side note if players are going to be picked via auction next year and existing franchises may have an option of keeping certain marquee players, how can Srini announce Dhoni as the captain of CSK for 2018? It can very well happen that another franchise picks Dhoni.

I think all teams will be disbanded and fresh bids will be organized for teams, so, even mama getting CSK isn't a guarantee.

No team apart from Pune and GL are getting disbanded .

Not sure were u read about fresh bids.Probably some nonsense rumor.
