During what time was the Indian cricket team at its peak/most dominant?

What year's team or bunch of player was the strongest in  Indian cricket history? In other words, the time when the select 11 or 15 were the best ever to be fielded by Indian cricket team.

was it during 2011 WC victory?

Well since losing to SA in group stages in WC 2011, we lost only one other match in an ICC tourney till today. So I would say that's pretty good :agree:

Yes.  2010-2011 was the best team in the last 20 years.   Before that, it was the Benson & Hedges team of 1985.

My best would be the 2011 WC winning team where every one of the top 7 was a match winner - Tendulkar, Sehwag, Gambhir, Kohli, Yuvraj, Dhoni and Raina.

Only the Aussies of early 2000s had such batting firepower and quality. Even if one out of those 7 fires, you would back India to win the  match. Never seen such depth and explosive batting lineup.

I agree. Of them, 3 have averages around 50 (if one takes SRT's record only as opener), Gambhir was around 40, Sehwag had  SR over 100, and both Yuvi and Raina averaged over 35 with 90-95 SR. The bowling was quite pedestrian though - I think that the attack of Sri, Zak and Nehra-ji in 2003 was more potent (backed by Bhajji at close to his peak).

The team of 2003 was the best I feel.

Not in the batting though - the bowling was very strong as I wrote above. In batting Kaif and Dinesh Mongia (!!!) were not good players, although the others were good - SRT, Ganguly, Dravid, Yuvi

I would say the batting was also better for the fact that this team performed alike, abroad as well as in subcontinent. Compared to the team now or 2013, which were sheeps abroad and could not bat for their life. The only place they perform or performed has been in India.

Not to mention that the team of 2003'ish were excellent players of spin. The team of today need a part time spinner from the opposition to be bundled out cheaply.

I think the original discussion was restricted solely to ODIs.

Where does it say so?

It doesn't say so anywhere. Based on the discussion in the posts, it had just come across that way. Perhaps I was wrong.

In that case, I'd pick the Ind team under Dravid as the strongest in Tests - Sehwag, Gambhir (for a 2-3 year period), Dravid, SRT, Ganguly, Laxman, Dhoni was one of the best batting lineups in the world both home and abroad. The bowling had Kumble and Zak, and Bhajji in that period was still okay. There were bowlers such as RP, Sree, etc. turning the occasional good performance.

2008-2011

Sachin

Sehwag

Gambhir (peak)

Dhoni (peak)

Yuvraj (peak)

Zaheer (peak)

Kohli

We had 4 of India's best match winners at the peak of their careers between 2008-11. The best part was how they managed expectations and delivered when it mattered the most. Easily the greatest Indian team ever.

We won in England

We should have won in Australia (Those decisions went against us, and we were better team in the series)

We should have won in South Africa (We tied, and that Kallis Inning was only reason SA was able to save it)

I doubt we will able to compete such again any time near future.

Also won in WI in 2006, who was much better than now (although that's not saying much).

We had a great team for the 2007 50-50 world-cup. Wonder what happened.. may be it was the format.

The strategy was wrong - for example, SRT was amongst the top scorers in 1996, 2003 and 2011 as an opener, and they made him bat at 4.

Moreover, there were a fair amount of internal disagreements, etc.
