Going forward, what is your ideal ODI combination ?

I think this should be the team going into the World Cup

Dhawan

Pant/Shreyas Iyer/KL Rahul/Sarfaraz - an aggressive opener who has the license to take advantage of powerplay and go after bowlers

Kohli

Rohit - will do a much better job at 4 as he struggles sometimes against swing as an opener

KL Rahul/Kedhar Jadhav/Manish Pandey - a solid batsman who can build a partnership but can play attacking shots.  Who can play spin and reverse swing well.

Dhoni - I feel he is still good enough to play as of now. Good wicket keeper to spinners and has experience of playing big tournaments which counts. Can bat steadily and can hit at a good strike rate.

Hardik Pandya

Kuldeep Yadav/Chahal for a leggie wicket taking option (or) Krunal Pandya/Vijay Shankar or another all rounder option - A good bowling option who can also bat.

Bhuvi

Shami

Bumrah/some other seamer

Among seamers, I think we need 3 wicket taking fast bowlers irrespective of the opposition or pitch conditions, who can bowl well with the new ball, who can bowl reverse swing, who can bowl well at the death and can bowl a good line and length if conditions are flat.

Umesh is not one of those bowlers because he can be a bit wayward on batting tracks and also loses his composure and starts bowling too short or wide when batsmen start attacking him. He has been given enough chances and he doesnt seem to fit the bill.

Shami is good but he has injury problems. He can solve the team's bowling head aches if he can return back to his form. He can tick all the boxes that are needed of a good fast bowler in ODIs.

Bumrah is a good LOI specialist who can bowl well at the death but he is not good with the new ball or with reverse swing. In other words, he is still not a wicket taker. If he improves and becomes a wicket taking bowler to go along with his other abilities, he should be in the side otherwise the team needs another seam bowling option.

Jadeja - can come in if pitch is a bit dry and opposition is SA/Aus/Eng. Also a good slogger at the end and a great fielder.

What do you think ?

I won't go as far as 2 years for now and pick 2019wc combo as its too early to go that far we don't know how good Pant and co will turn out but I would like to go as far as six months from now and want to see the following odi team.

I will keep Dhoni around at least for 5-6 months and let Pant or Ishan Kishan keep.

My team I would like to see in next 6 months. Order can change depending if Pant can open. I will put 15 player squad

Dhawan

Rohit

Kohli

Rahul

Pant

Manish

Dhoni

Jadhav

Pandya

Bumrah

Shami

Bhuvi

Thampi

Kuldeep

Jadeja

In - Thampi, Manish

Out - Yuvi, Ashwin

Performance needs close attention - Jadeja, Dhoni

Players who need to be rested/rotated so other youngsters can get in - Dhawan, Bhuvi(blBoth are doing well but later should be rest down the line to give chance to Thampi and co.

There are many other youngsters who can be tried, but I will concentrate on this for now and even rest Dhawan later so players like Ishan Kishan, Iyer can be further introduced

All the batsmen in the side like Dhawan, Kohli, Rohit, KL Rahul, Kedhar Jadhav are all specialists. So with Dhoni in the side, that gives no room for extra bowling options in case 1 or 2 bowlers have an off day.

If Dhoni or Kedhar Jadhav(or KL Rahul) can be replaced by batting all rounders, it will give lot of balance but I doubt Krunal Pandya or Vijay Shankar are good enough to fill those spots.

In any case, I cant see Dhoni being dropped for World Cup.

I don't think Dhoni should be playing 2019 WC based on current form.   I want to start auditioning replacement keepers ASAP - Pant is in the lead, but we don't know if he can do his thing at the international level.   We need to identify the 'keeper-bat for white ball cricket latest by end of this year, so he has all of 2018 to play and be 'seasoned' by the time of the WC.

I want a proper batsman who can bowl 8+ overs of decent spin for the 6/7/8 slot - Axar Patel or Krunal Pandya look like they could do that job.

I want Manish Pandey, Kedar Jadhav and one more middle order bat to get more opportunities.   The likes of KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson need a proper run.

That squad is still couple of wicket taking seamers short. Unless Bumrah really improves as a bowler, I cant see him taking wickets with the new ball or in the middle overs which are crucial to restrict oppositions on flat tracks. Thampi has done decently well in IPL and he still has a lot more to prove.

If Shami gets back to form and if we have another really good attacking seamer with the new ball, we will have a good bowling attack with Bhuvi and Pandya to support them and Kuldeep (or Chahal or Jaddu depending on pitch) as the spinner option.

Shami is there for new ball and we will have to develop a young guy for the nee ball, like Thampi. This is the age you develop them and let them use the new ball.

So Bhuvi/Shami can open and when either one of them is not playin, we can try Pandya and Thampi with te new ball.

Also later I would like to Khejroliya and feel he can do well too with the new ball.

So we do have bowlers who can bowl.

I feel we are still short of couple of wicket taking seamers. Spinners(outside India) and all rounders will restrict runs only for a while. If good batting sides have wickets in hand, they cant be stopped. You need to be taking wickets at regular intervals to stop run flow.

Yeah, Thampi or someone else could be a good option but have to wait and see.

Bumrah could improve and become a strike bowler. Umesh has been given enough chances but hasnt become a good ODI bowler and I dont think he ever will.

^Siraj has impressed me more than Thampi.

I hear a lot about Nathu Singh,Seen some domestic game videos but unless see him at a bigger stage atleast IPL,can't pass judgement. Many have flattered to deceive.

Unfortunate part is Shami,Bhuvi,Bumrah and Umesh are all equally good and all can play in the main X1 unfortunately none can bat...Bhuvi has regressed a lot with the bat.So it weakens our batting and especially if your middle order is Dhoni,Yuvi and Jadhav than you do need some allrounders atleast

For me every slot shud have options

1. Aggresive opener- Dhawan, Rahul, kishen, Pant

2. The one who can anchor-  Rohit, Rahul

3. Kohli

4. No.4- Rahul,Manish, iyer, pandey , hooda

5. Wk-batsman- Dhoni, pant, kishen, samson

6. Batsman + 6th bowler - Krunal, shankar

7- all rounder - Pandya

Bowlers -

Attacking Spinners- Kuldeep, Chahal

holding spinner- Jadeja, ashwin, Axar ( will defintely have these guys in plan for exp, variety)

Attacking seamer- Shami, Avesh, Nathu, Umesh

The one who keeps things tight- Bhuvi, rajpoot

Left arm seamer- Sran, kulwant

Death over specialist -  bumrah, thampy

Few players ill have in mix- Sarfraz, Siraj, Sanghwan, Rana , M ashwin, Rahul chahar

We have to try a lot of players rather being rigid on few and have backups to - injury, form anything can change

Players who shudnt be even on radar- Rahane, mishra, karthik, dhawal, unadkat, yuvraj singh

At least in ODIs, Umesh is a step below Shami, Bhuvi and Bumrah. Shami is the best of all if he gets back to form. Bhuvi doesnt have a good strike rate and doesnt take many wickets nowadays. So I dont think we can class him as a strike bowler like Shami. Bumrah is similar but he is a step below Bhuvi who has better control, temperament and intelligence.

Sarfraz opener- Nope ........no way . Playing cheeky shots against old ball is diff to playing against new ball against quality bowling.

Why to try something that already has failed

With some batsmen, you never know and there is no saying for certain, unless he plays as an opener. If he has the ability to play shots, he can put pressure right back on the bowlers from first over. If not Sarfaraz, someone like Pant could be the opener.

Rohit has improved as a batsman in ODIs. He still struggles against swing/seam because his technique is still not great which is evident from his test record. But if bats in the middle order, he wont have that problem. Plus he is generally a good attacking batsman against spin and can build partnerships in the middle overs and start hitting towards the end overs once he is set as he generally does.
