How good is Shami?

Amir and Junaid's test match performances and numbers look 3rd rate in comparison to Shami's returns after his injury comeback.   "don" promptly shifts the goal posts to ODI cricket talking about finals and such.

Keep the entertainment coming!!

Banter and competitiveness aside - Amir has clearly been quite pedestrian in test cricket recently, but you have to give him credit for manning up and bowling his share of overs.  Shami for all his incisiveness, has had trouble staying on the field.

It is totally unsurprising that Amir wishes to quit test cricket to try and extend his white ball career - that's where the money is, and he did lose 5 years of earning potential.  The decision makes complete sense from an individual perspective - why burn up a couple of years of earnings potential toiling in test cricket, where he isn't even that good.   But it would really put a lot of pressure on the Pakistan test team - their batting order already has gaping holes in it, once Amir is not playing tests - they will be reduced to winning tests on the back of Yasir and Shadab, with the odd performance thrown in from the likes of Hassan Ali, Sohail etc.    Basically, Bangladesh/ SL level of test cricket.

Another negative of Amir quitting test cricket will be that the workload on the other 'good' pace bowlers will increase.  Hastening the inevitable injuries for Hassan - I admire young Hassan Ali's spirit and effort-driven bowling - but the guy is going to break down if his bowling workload is not managed.

shami and umesh bowl full test match with speeds like this in SL dead pitches.

140/147 to 138/145 -  avg/high this is genuine pace in test matches (  bowlers bowl 3-5 k faster in loi), they need to be treated as such, you have to treat such fastbowlers with a bit of leeway, they can go off the field and comeback its very demanding in sapping 38 deg Celsius, half of us wont be able to run in it forget bowling 145k.

Barring injury.   If Shami, Yadav, Bhuvi, Ishant, Ash, Jaddu, Pandya are all fit and firing - I think we're going to be celebrating our next visits to PardesiLand.

this is really it, replace Ash/Jad with Kuldeep as situation demands , these guys can certainly take 20 quick wickets on most aus/sa pitches, we have a very good chance this time in SA provided batting does not fold down - kohli/rahul/vij/jinx/puj 300 every-time and it will be SA under pressure from ball one. wish to see pandey in tests instead of rohit.

I would not even pick him for LOI cricket, wrap him in cotton wool and save him for Tests. If we pull off a SA test series win it would be our greatest triumph since the WC win.

Yes.... Shami needs to play just test matches, World Cups , CTs and one preparatory tournament before these.

Should not be played in  T20Is and  normal ODIs.  ( although he is mighty good in ODIs )

Fantastic bowler in tests. Can swing the ball both ways, extract lateral movement off the seam, and his low center of gravity action would ensure more lbw decisions in his favor. But gets way too carried away in one dayers, has been hit for 75-85 runs way too often. That does not augur well with a quality pacer. I agree that even the likes of Waqar had been taken for runs on some occasions, but not the way Shami has been hit. And there are days when Shami is at his arrogant worst, constantly hitting short of length when the wicket demands a fuller length. That's where he has to improve his mindset as a bowler and improve his situational awareness. He can become even more lethal as a bowler, and more importantly a match winner.

I think Shami has given away 70 runs or more thrice in his ODI career.  I guess it happens to many attacking pacers these days with 330+ scores being notched up so often.

Flip side is.... he is a genuine wicket-taker with 91 wickets from only 49 ODI matches.

Agreed...but do you remember the test match at wanderers or the second test played at New Zealand...In the first instance we had set a target of 450 on a pitch that had plenty to offer, yet Shami bowled poorly on the track and was duly punished by ABD and Kallis....similar occasion in the second test in New Zealand where we had a lead of 230+ and New Zealand were reeling at 95/4 or 5 in the second innings....when Brendon McCullum and Jimmy Neeshan took the game away from us...even that pitch had a lot to offer, yet Shami and Ishant kept on bowling short and wide..two important test matches went begging....we could have drawn both series..yet due to lack of penetration they were gone..Am not blaming Shami alone for these..I just hope he has taken these in his strides and comes out a better bowler while we are travelling overseas...He has always bowled better in Asia, yet when there was more to offer, he just got carried away with pace and bounce instead of focusing on lengths much like his counterparts Ishant Sharma and Umesh.

Most of his wickets (Out of his First 60 wickets) he got when batsman were trying to hit him out of park after 35-40 overs.

He has improved a lot since Australia tour before Cwc 2015 and that might have given him confidence. And he seems a good wicket taking option. Alas, he still goes for plenty of runs in limited overs format. :(

He is just like Dale steyn of India (Accurate, Wicket taker but not so classy at death bowling like Starc. )

India needs to use him judiciously. Using him in intial overs and middle overs for short spells to break patnerships. Wish India plays Bhuvi, Bumrah, Shami, Pandya instead of a spinner. Can't see any of them warming bench in Odi matches like CT :(

Before CWC 15, Shami was just average

and he hadn't bowled better in Asia except for that lethal reverse swing spell in Kolkata against Windies.

He was a notch above average in overseas tour.(Used to take Amla's wicket in every match of Sa tour).

He has become the lead of pack during CWC and lethal

afterwards.

Am referring to his overall career..He started playing from Nov 2013 onwards...after that series against Windies, India was occupied with overseas test matches until 2015.So how much cricket did he actually play in the subcontinent prior to 2015 WC?..In his career he has played hardly 7-8 test matches in India at an average of 23....Add his spells in Srilanka.....he has been splendid there as well
