We have been viewed as being loyal dogs of the British, happily fighting their wars. We even today still celebrate our "valor" fighting under an English flag.

It is a bit surprising that in India everyone is completely ignorant about the contribution of Indian soldiers in the world wars, most think of world war as the war for power between highly developed tech nations with minuscule contribution from Asian countries barring Japan.
