Is this start of new trend for Indian cricket team? New low of favoritism.

And there is huge gulf in quality of both players?

A better opener is not better than proven middle order failure?

I disagree completely, Rahul is not given by any means. Don't make him into Bradman. he seems to be an answer for every vacant spot in all formats for lot of people.

I don't understand why people are complaining, there is nothing wrong with selection and it has shown that no player is safe  and can rest on their past laurels.

The problem is this current line up may well get shunted inside 150 on this pitch against the saffie quicks.dhawan, rohit won't survive on such pitches

Kohli, Shastri clearly have roles dedicated for batsmen..

Rahul is a designated opener, they will never try him in the middle order in any format.. So, he loses to Dhawan in Tests and Rahane in ODIs.

Well, Kohli did not have any problem playing Rohit at no.3, Rahane at no.3 (to play Rohit at no.5) and now Rohit at no.5 (who is a no.6). So fixed positions excuse only for non-buddies?

Can you give it in writing that rahul and Rahane will survive and make 100s. Don't turn them into something they are not.

If Dhawan and Rohit fail the other two will get their chances, I don't understand why there is so much fuss. Rahane was not able to buy a run even if he wanted, Rahul when he got his chances did not make himself undroppable.

Then Kohli should have dropped himself after failing in Aus home series.

Also, what failures did Rahul have? He was our best player in the tough Aus home series and also had a record of 6 or 7 consecutive 50s.

He did drop himself for fourth test when he was injured didn't he. It has been 9 months since that Aus series and India has played two full test series, it is not Dhwan's fault that Rahul is injury prone , he was out of the team but he got a chance in Sl and he has not looked back. If he fails here Rahul will get his chances to prove himself and Dhwan will be laid to pastures.

Kohli  sacrificed his comfort in order to pick Rohit when he batted at no3 , what else do you need from captain.

I think you can't differentiate between the class of different players.raul's technique is miles better than dhawan to counter this saf seam attack .dhawan will be a toast to philander 10/10 times .rahane is horribly out of form but he still warrants a test spot away from home more than rohit but still this was not the mind boggling change ,the dhawan-raul switch was

Sorry I myself don't see Rahul as this can't miss batsman, selection has been spot on in my view. There is no magic pill that Rahane will suddenly get runs, he was horrible against lowly srilankans in all formats and Indians had no practice matches so they have given chances to players in form.

Don't think he is so rigid with switching players between middle order positions...  but he probably sees sending Rahul in the middle order as drastic as sending Rohit to open.

No. 3 is as specialist a position as opening. As I said, switching positions allowed only for buddies for them to stay in team.

Hard to recall when was the last time 2 young batsmen averaging 45-46 were dropped.

There have been cases favoritism in case of fringe players, but best ones are generally considered untouchables.

First Pujara dropped for slow batting a year back and now Rahul and Rahane.

Rahane in poor form, but proven performer.

Rahul in form and proven performer.

I have no problem with this selection. These decisions in my mind are toss ups and fair. I am baffled at pandya playing. Saha also is a pretender. Rest justify themselves. I would have preferred Ishant over Shami/Bumrah.

Absurd. Can you give me in writing Rohit or dhawan or anyone in the team can survive and score 100 for sure. No? Right? So anyone can play for India. I can go and play for India. Why don't they select me .

Because it should have been other way around. If rahane and rahul failed, dhawan and rohit should have been looked into. Rahul and Rahane should clearly have been first choice.Hence the fuss. BTW I don't see Rahul and Rahane getting chances if India wins and Dhawan and Rohit fails. They will keep getting chances.Only if India lose humiliatingly they may reconsider.

Where is this failure of Rahul that some talk about? You are sounding like casual cricket fan who mix up format and don't know what they are talking about. Rahul has been stellar in tests.Performance is not measured by only century. Those golden half centuries he scored should have made him undroppable atleast for a considerable time.
