Team India in 4th innings under Captain Kohli

a good long sighted thread. Yes ... this has been a problem for some time which has got brutally exposed by  Lanka in SAF. Lankan team is only a group of above average to good players at best .Yet they chased down in SAF in 2 consecutive 4rth inns, that too so effortlessly if  mammothness of target & wkts lost are taken into account.

This  reveals a lot about our team and its ineffectiveness w.r.t  4rth inns chansing. How pathetic we has been!!!!!! .

Solutions : Drop for ever that mental midget Rahane.

Shaw,Mayank,Vihari,Pant & Jadeja should form a  formidable top 7  along with  Kohli and Pujara and play as positively as it could be  in such instances of 4rth inns chases. If these Lankans can be such effective using this strategy , no doubt we too can if adopted the correct method.

Do you think we can invest on Mayank and shaw for our prime opners. Yes, they have some early success but both look susceptible against swing.

I have zero knowledge on domestic players.

But its way past time that we started grooming test only players (specialists) and start avoiding multi-format players(batsmen especially) in tests.

When did we choke when we had manageable totals like this?

Bridgetown 97? Sachin got two howlers in both the innings.

We chased down 130 odd against Australia at home in 2001.

We chased down 233 at Adelaide.

We chased 200 odd against Pakistan in Delhi in 2007.

We chased down 200+ twice against Australia in 2010 at home.

Most of our overseas famous wins came when we batted first. For example, 2002 against england, 06 joburg, 07 Perth, 07 Trent bridge, 2010 Durban.

I don't think we ever lost a manageable chase like the ones we lost last two years. We never had a strong bowling so we were rarely given the opportunity.

Chasing 200 at home and chasing 200 plus overseas is lot of difference.India has stunk overall when it comes to chases away from home.

I feel Indian batsmen both in SA and England  lost before they came to bat in fourth innings. The openers are biggest reason for these flops. They were worse than tail enders and Kohli has not yet done anything in fourth innings chases.

We need a mix of people from "slope of enlightenment" (Kohli+Pujara) and mount stupid (Pant+Pandya)

Many of our cricketers are in the valley of despair (and their careers are not moving forward either to slope of enlightenment): Rahane, Vijay, Dhawan, Rohit, ....

Uber defensive mindset never works in South Africa. More the experience you get more you get defensive. It is a recipe for disaster.

Stats support your argument. Last 4 years (Kohli's captaincy) out of all teams that have toured RSA, we have the lowest rpo....excluding Zimbabwe. In 2 out of the 3 tests last year we played more number of overs than them.

Even in the 3rd innings not just 4th innings we made a meal of setting a decent target.

This match is a case in point. India had a lead of 41 runs. All they had to is not wet their pants and set a decent total like 300 in the last innings. Look how Tendulkar was stuck in this innings, so was Dravid. Only Ganguly was a bit more positive. Tendulkar was stuck in a hole. Frustrating. A test win here would have helped us beat SA in SA in a series.

Sidhu not out in both innings. Both no balls. Several noballs were not called. Seriously that will play a role as bowlers get advantage by being quicker

At least 5 (or more) no balls not called, saw the same when Pak benefited vs England in 2001 IIRC except it was the English umps who shat the bed.

God that was a big missed opportunity along with cape Town 2010 but our batting wasnt to blame for 2010.

Since Kohli assumed full charge of test captaincy, here are the 4th innings stats of all teams.

PATHETIC

Can someone ask for Kohli and Shastri's opinion about this? Forget the top teams, minnows like SL and WI are schooling our overrated maharathis, how to approach 4th innings chases, how not to soil pants after a bad start......

Yet batting mainstays can never be dropped, never questioned, hyped to the moon and then some. Not a question of ability, just mental toughness.

Main reason why we have been so dismal in SENA tests, we set unrealistic targets for our bowlers. They manage to shield our mental midget batsmen in SC but you can't always hope for innings win or 4th innings sub-100 targets in SENA. Even ATG Aus/WI never put such burden on their bowling units.
