Rishabh Pant not suitable to bat at No. 6 in Australia, says Anil Kumble

when all things are taken into perspective , Pant did ok, i feel. This was such a spinner  friendly wkt or at the least tailor made for a spinner like Lyon. Even Pujara & Rahane, though scored those runs were not that all comfortable  at the crease(keep in mind Pujara and Rahane were  given 2 and 1 lives by 3rd umpire  against Lyon, I mean so close to getting out).Even the performance of much  more experienced specialists  Kohli,Rohit,Vijay & Rahul   were not up to the expected marks  generally and of course not up to the level as that of Pant.

Means based on the general toughness in scoring  & also his experience at this level , Pant was ok.If  not any thing dramatic happens, he is sure to learn and improve with experience.

So? even tailenders can defend straight balls. Defensive game is always tested when ball is swinging and seaming. You want to test defensive game on flat pitch? Why would he defend on flat pitches when he can thrash the ball? Akash Chopra had a great defensive technique, failed at test level. Gillespie could defend all day wasn't a batsman. It's all about scoring runs whichever way one scores. He already has two 90s one 100 in test in first six months of his test career with his natural game. His game will become better as he matures and plays more.

Defensive technique is tested on pitches that are hard to bat on and against great bowlers on even good pitches to bat on. Swinging and seaming pitches are only a short fraction of that equation.

Its about scoring runs AS REQUIRED. This is not ping-pong, where surface and conditions are uniform across the board. A 55 in 130 balls chasing 220 is FAR more valuable than a 105 in 110 balls to declare for 630/4.

His game MAY become better, but as it stands right now, he is showing that he can only bat in one gear - TONK. And its laughable if you think VVS or Ganguly had an inferior defensive technique than anyone not named Pujara or Kohli in the current team. As far as VVS goes, i rate his technique and strokeplay superior to Kohli - just not as consistent, hence Kohli nudges ahead.

the problem with pant i see is that once his batting is good the keeping suffers. Once his keeper is poor is batting is good.

If we are to look at Pant as long term (cause his current returns are Sahaesque) then India have to play 7 batters and 4 bowlers with 6 proper frontline batsman. Ashwin/ Jadeja especially overseas cannot be counted on with the bat. Shami Bumrah Ishant are all number 11s.

Long term the form and reliability of Pant will determine India's team composition.

the guys barely played 6 matches. a little premature to judge.

I think Pant has his own method and he should stick to that.He scored 53 runs from 2 inns on a more bowling friendly pitch .With experience he would improve or sure.
