From 2013-2016 rahane did pretty well

1-2 bad yrs can happen ... a huge reason was a lot of cricket in Subcontinent which is not his strongest point.  But he holds gr8 value overseas. His 48 in Sa in 3rd can look just 48 but was worth in gold. Yes he needs to improve a lot in subcontinet but with time it can happen ....even pujara has overseas

Yes last 2-3 yrs have been bad last 2 series was better ......n i think he shud get 2 series more which m sure he ll get

He did well in his initial 2-3 years so no one questioned his place till then. His bad run started with the home series vs England in late 2016 and he is yet to recover from that. And btw in this phase he has been below par not just in Asia but also in SENA which was supposed to be his strong zone.

Since Nov 2016, he averages 29.90 in 15 Tests in Asia. and 27.94 in 10 Tests in SENA. At least when Pujara was doing poorly in SENA he was still our no. 1 batsman in Asia. Rahane has been mediocre everywhere. Of course he has had the odd good innings in each series which is why he has kept his place but clearly this poor run has now lasted for close to 3 years (about half of his career) which means it's now time for the TM to back someone like Gill instead.

He can hit the peek now to

He can. But he can also continue his current run which means a couple of 50s in each series at best. The TM keeps waiting for a truly bad series which never comes and before we realize it's been another year since he scored a 100 against non-Lankan opposition.

No.6 spot is basically between batsman vs All rounder......thing that ll go against rahane, gill for 6th spot is that they both dont ball

We also need to keep in mind  experience is also imp.....we already have 2 openers mayank n shaw who are inexp ...then pant n pandya most days well. M not against gill but for test cricket he has to wait 2-3 series atleast and before him vihari is in line.

Rahane has played quality knock so he deserves backing. Gill at the same time shud be drafted in ODI cricket

Pandya hasn't done enough to be indispensable in the Test XI so there will be enough games where we'd go in with 6 batsmen. Rahane can compete with Vihari for that spot. Not a fan of the queue/line system. There are certain players who are too good for that and have to bypass all such queues. I am sure SRT jumped ahead of a lot of prolific domestic scorers when he made his debut, Kohli was backed ahead of the likes of Badrinath and similarly Gill needs to be pushed ahead of Vihari. Rahane can remain in the mix for a while based on his exploits from 2013-15 but he can no longer be the first choice no. 5. Of course, the moronic TM will probably pick Noh!t when they drop Rahane and I will always be against that.

Second innings pitch got easier to bat on after some time. Even Vihari scored 100 not out, no wickets fell whole day. It shows pitch got easier to bat. Pitch was spicey in the first innings.

Vihari's catch was dropped by first slip fielder when he was around 70.Also,there was close lbw appeal which I think he was out.Gill's innings was flawless, without edges, and that too at strike rate over 80.He is top scorer in series !!!!

I have to agree word by word with this post. It's simple common sense philosophy. Nothing complex. Unfortunately that's what is lacked by (probably intentional) TM and experts as they have their own interests to protect.

Come off it. Yes, a dropped catch in the slips looks bad. But if you start counting those, you have to start looking at potentially every play and miss, every mis-hit, etc. (Pant, for instance, has never played an innings without a horrendous hoick where he could just as well have been bowled or hit it straight up in the air, but instead top-edged it for four through some vacant area. It's not like it doesn't happen - when he gets out cheaply, something like that is the root of it.)

@vaul @abc even gill catch is dropped as well by the keeper. International keepers do catch that. Both of them got a life. It does happen though very few batsman play with out giving any chances.

Tendulkar was dropped half a dozen times WC 2011 SF, so, should we forfeit the cup!

Gill played leg glance(not edge) which went fine, and keeper dived in air as ball barely touched his hand before it went for four.It was a half-chance rather than dropped catch, rather,I would say keeper made superb effort. Can you imagine Dhoni diving like him !

Throughout the series,Gill is only batsman who did not give single edge into slip corridor or to keeper or even inside edge hitting/missing stumps.

Vihari got caught 3 times in slip corridor, one inside edge went into stumps, apart from one edge dropped.Easwaran edged twice into slip corridor/keeper,one time inside edge hit the stumps.Panchal edged twice to slip corridor/keeper,two edges were dropped by keeper while playing cut shot.Agarwal edged twice to keeper.

Pitch was as difficult as was on first day -it is approach that matters. On first day there was challenge of sluggishness due to moisture.By fourth day it had dried up completely and had got quicker, apart from seam movement which remained throughout the match. Two edges off the spinners were caught at waist height indicating quickness of wicket.Indian pacers could not utilize pace, bounce and seam movement effectively.Umesh is useless in these conditions.Avesh khan lacks ability to utilize seam movement.Siraj or Warrier would have got them all out. Also WI batsmen were better in shot selection unlike in second innings of 2nd match where they threw away wickets after getting lead of 120.6 wickets in a day does not fall on easiest of pitch.
