Mariyam
Olympics are such a sham. They may have been relevant in ancient Greece, when humans had to run around and lift heavy stuff all day. Today when we have machines to do most of our grunt work, why should we eulogise those who can run the fastest or jump the farthest? Absolute sham of an event. GoI shouldn't spend a penny on the Olympics. Instead use that money to develop basic sports facilties in schools.

What is the point of spending money on athletics if olympics is ignored? Only sports that will be left is Cricket,Soccer,Tennis and Golf. 2/4 are rich people sports still Golf and Tennis. Cricket has enough facilities and soccer well maybe you have a point. The only reason badminton got a boost in recent times is because of Saina and Sindhu winning medals. Also lesser work days are lost to illnesses. Its great that our badminton girls are winning medals. All I'm saying is that the state should bear the cost of training them. It should be borne by the private industry.

Gollum
Olympic hockey qualification 1st leg y'day at Kalinga. Indian women beat USA 5-1...stupendous show because similar strength teams, USA dominated us in 1st quarter before our girls found their rhythm. Best I have seen them play since 2017 Asia Cup matches against Japan and China. Of course no chance of medaling in Tokyo, but good to see some quality hockey. Rani Rampal after a slow start was brilliant. Indian men beat Russia 4-2...ghatiya, low IQ hockey on full display. Flattering scoreline. Something is off since last year's Asian Games, we are going backwards, too many players playing on past reputation, poor tactics, sloppy defending, massively declined GK. Some good dribbling skills and high fitness standard but we aren't going to challenge the European powers (and Aussies/Kiwis/Argentinians) playing such unimaginative hockey. The Dutch coach Max Caldas made interesting observations about our training methods recently, about how our players aren't being trained to apply their minds on the field, how they aren't training to create/solve problems on the field etc instead working on basic skills like ball trapping and marking...contrast with European training philosophy where players are encouraged to be creative. 18 months back I thought our lads would win a medal in either the WC or Olympics, suffice to say that ship has sailed..dunno what's more infuriating, these guys or our white ball cricket teams? Hockey India has made changes recently which is going to kill the sport in our country, like the 5 a side format in HIL , why are our sports administrators such idiotic, inept and insufferable pricks? HI sucks Today 2nd leg, hope we complete the job without much tension. Edited November 2, 2019 by Gollum Vijy

Gollum
In women's hockey if we avoid last place finish I will consider it wonderful news. When it comes to men, no chance against Aussies. NZ is our bogey team (like in ICC tournaments ), likewise Arg generally finds it tough against us, Spain is touch and go. if we qualify to next phase we will be underdogs against all 4 teams of the other group: BEL, GER, NED, GBR (CAN, RSA no qualification chance with all due respect)...doesn't matter who we face, in fact GBR may be a tougher test than GER. But nothing insurmountable, only guys against whom we have no chance are those bloody Aussies (only ARG and NED are tough match-ups for them) and luckily we will avoid them in QF. If we can win QF we'll have 2 additional chances at getting our 1st hockey medal since 1980 Moscow. Edited December 11, 2019 by Gollum
