i think  this 5th down suits him  better than 4rth.  Even his T20 record  is testimony to this. I mean it seems  he is more at ease  in scoring in T20 mode  rather than anchoring  which he was doing as an opener. As an opener he would score a  '58 off 75'  then would get out soon when it was time to cash on it. It seems his temperament &  fitness both are suited to this   T20 mode batting  and hence would be more ideal at 5.

What if he gets dismisses cheaply next few innings at 5. Can't be decides which number suits him on basis of one innings.

It’s not based on one innings . His ideal position is opening , but since he can hit big and also gets his timing from the word go he should do fine when he has to face 40-60 balls , good for a no5 .

The concern is about the strike rate at which he scored 1000 runs. He should have scored the 1000 at proper pace.

least of concern....he played at 150 s/r yesterday in ODI. The guy bats at 145 s/r in t20 ...so he has ability

he started WI series with 79 s/r now its 83 so its improving. One of the reason for his s/r was Wc where he was technically not at his best and then he didnt have a secure position for long. Player who doesnt have secure position will tend to play for themselves. Such concern is valid for a guy like Rahane who lacks ability but Rahul will fix it soon. If 10-15 games can mess ur stats all it wud take 10-15 games more to fix it . Give him a secure place, position and tell him to play his natural game thats the job of seniors

Strike rate is not the least but one of the important aspect in ODI. Not in every innings player scores at 150. There are bad innings which bring it down.

I do agree that his strike rate is showing improvement after he has been dropped. The message as reached him that he needs to improve his trike rate and probably him getting dropped has made him score runs at acceptable level. Some players cone back stronger after being dropped. It has helped him to get better.

Hope by then end of this year we will see his overall strike rate and average at a acceptable ratio.

Iyer has given impressive numbers ( avg 40 and strike rate 101.  So he has passed the statistical expectations.

Rahul is showing  improvements in numbers (strike rate).  Hopefully he too achieved benchmarks in an years time.

Dhawan is the highest scorer in the series facing a tough attack of Starc and Cummins. Sharma is world-class ODI opener. The openers spot may be vacant when Dhawan and Sharma  strikes bad patch at end of their career; which is still few years away.

Shaw has the attacking game and shots over in-field as well as ability to survive as opener. Agarwal and Shaw are the options for that spot. Doors are also not closed for Rahul as ODI opener. You never know when Kohli takes any decision unexpectedly

Everyone shud hold opinion on iyer - his runs have come against WI, SL, BANG

he doesnt look comfortable against pace at all

Let iyer play against diff teams n in diff condition before we make an opinion on him. Stats with such small sample size shud be ignored

Versus Mat Inns NO 100s 50s 0s HS   Runs Avg S/R Ca St
Australia 2 2 0 0 0 0 7 11 5.50 42.31 0 0
South Africa 3 2 0 0 0 0 30 48 24.00 82.76 2 0
Sri Lanka 3 3 0 0 2 0 88 162 54.00 101.25 1 0
West Indies 6 5 0 0 4 0 71 266 53.20 112.71 2 0
Overall (4) 14 12 0 0 6 0 88 487 40.58 101.46 5 0

Whatever may be the statistics , at this stage he does not look comfortable against pace and this was noticeable earlier too  and  the problem is

      not addressed .

Sample size is very small - 2 innings each against Australia and South Africa. He is the bestperfromer in ODi amongst all batsmen who have been tried. TM needs to backs uch talents who have performed better than others.
