At this point his test average is 34. It can either increase or decrease. Only time will tell. Needs tremendous 3 years to get into good test average category.

I correct my previous statement. Just realized Rahul averages 34.59 in tests and not 36 which I mentioned in previous post. He may have smashed Lyon but overall do you really think 34.59 is a good test average ? Players like Yuvraj who had test average of 34 are considered as great failures.

KL averages 36.8 as opener, placing him at no. 20 in last decade among all openers in test cricket who played 10 or more matches. From India, Sehwag (42.5), Dhawan (40.6), Vijay (38.7) are above him, while Gambhir (30.7) is at bottom. So he's been average, guys like Strauss (32.6), Cowan (33), alviro Petersen (34.6) come below him. Other talented bats like Markram (38.4), Renshaw (33.6) are hovering around same mark. Opening is tough, KL needs to do better of course, but he's not been handled well across all formats (and that does affect u mentally).....there's more to come in his career.

Apart from Sehwag, Vijay and Dhawan, I think Rohit Sharma, Prithvi Shaw and Mayank Agarwal must also be having much better average than Rahul in test cricket.

 

Rahul is a fabulous player in T20i, but he needs to do much better in Tests and ODI.

Rohit, Shaw,Mayank are just at start of opening career....Rahul's been through toughest tours which others are yet to face (Eng,SA). But no doubt he has to grind his way back, and has slid down pecking order compared to those 3, and probably even gill in tests.

 

But he is a special talent, and i am not using the word in sense it was attached to Rohit for so long - Rahul has good technique along with shot-making ability. I remember Steve Smith also saying KL Rahul was his favorite indian bat in an interaction with some kids.

Talent, spoken about by great players is all fine, however the execution of good cricketing skills possessed by a batsman is more important. Even 50 more ex cricketers praising Rahul won't help improve his poor test average if he does not actually scores them while batting.

 

I do agree to one point you make. Rahul needs to score double hundreds in domestic cricket alreast. It will give him more confidence. Probably more than the praises he gets by many other cricketers.

This guy seems to be the biggest culprit in most of our crucial defeats in the last two years.  W.C semis he was probably the single biggest reason for defeat..  ( horrible figures of 6.3 E.R while R Jadeja had 3.3 E.R )..  horrible returns during that Ashton Turner heist. 

Complains too much of dew and his body language itself reveals too much on such occasions.

Unless he improves his batting skill, he should not play. To play as a pure spinner ,one needs to be like Murli or Warne.  Even Warne (a legend with the ball) could bat and score useful runs down the order ,if required.
