Should Rohit be given LOI captaincy?

I like captains such as Martin Crowe, Mark Taylor, etc. These guys know how to take advantage of situation, conditions, etc., and get the best out of players

To be frank, I miss the above type of captaincy in Indian teams. I do not think we are always good at identifying the right candidate (at times, the guy with the best batting avg gets the job). Many times in India, you will also find monotonous captains, who like to stick with a script and fail to adjust to the dynamics of a game.

Rohit can be relatively more flexible and innovative. Give him the LOI captaincy job till 2021. Also identify a youngster to be groomed as VC. The VC then can take over as captain post 2021 if required. Who would be the VC candidates in the mold of Crowe, Taylor, etc.?

PS

One complication is that it can be difficult to have Kohli under Rohit in LOIs and vice versa in Tests .... If Rohit has to be the LOI captain, he may need to quit tests (like Morgan for Eng, who is focused on the shorter formats)

Virat, Rohit, Iyer,Rahul all 4 have shown ability to captain sides.

Rahul was a surprise though didn’t think he had it in him but well done today.

I still think Iyer is the next in line. He captains a big team like Mumbai, has become a mainstay captain of Delhi in IPl and seems to have impressed Dada and Ponting- 2 great captains. I think he should be the one getting it if he becomes indispensable in the middle order.

Bumrah can be what Kumble was to Ganguly/Dravid or Zak was to Dhoni, the captain of the bowling attack.

These guys were simply superb as captains. I could just watch games to watch them captaining:

Let’s not forget Cronje the most underrated and innovative captain ever. The stigma of fixing may have dented some of his decisions but I used to remember some unique batting positions under him like promoting Kluesner at times or Boje or Pollock.

Another great innovative captain was Fleming. He used to declare with his team trailing to give the opposition captain a challenge to see if he has the guts to force results. There was a reason why Nzl used to punch above its weight.

Mccullum was very innovative as well

Next in line wud depend on various factors- form , seniors and most importantly if he keeps his place. Soon his challenge will begin and their is a lot of talent behind him which can make anyone return to team tough. Even during dhoni sehwag n yuvi were ahead in line but sehwag lost his form n yuvi didnt impress seniors as captaincy material.

cronje had ample real-time input from woolmer. I think fleming, crowe and mark taylor were among the best that I've seen. McCullum was exciting and unorthodox, but had too much of an attacking mindset - sometimes one has to slow down the pace of play.

Mike Brearley was another good captain. I used to enjoy watching Pataudis field placement and strategically he was good who focussed more on strengths and totally ignored what would not work.

brearley was a great captain, but was a damn poor player of course. would barely walk into even SL or Bang XI these days.

Have heard about him being a good captain but should have shown better game sense in the 1979 WC final -> LINK

yes, he should have changed batting order. mine would have been: gooch, boycott (anchor one end), gower (best ODI batter for eng then), larkins (busy player), botham (middle order firepower), randall (good at chasing), chris old (lower order slogger), brearley.

but they would still have lost against mighty big bird and co.

Although he had greats like Bob Willis, Botham, Gower playing under him his captaincy was what kept him in team rather than his individual skills. Gatting was also there in top order who added stability and quality to team which was led by Brearley.

Doordarshan used to telecast then but ball by ball coverage was not there. Ball by ball was only available on transistor which I used to carry to college. Just had to switch the knob between Short wave and medium wave. The 80's was when cricket television coverage actually improved for cricket matches played by India in India or abroad.

1979 WC wasn't telecast in India apart from footages and clippings in news. 1983 final was telecast though as India had reached finals. But Brearely was the best captain then from whatever one could make out from restricted coverages, articles and team results.

Even when batting, he was too slow. As the captain, who is batting in the middle, he should have tried to pick up the RR ....Turned the chase into an improbable task for others

We need to win one of the next two T20 WCs esp. since we have the talent pool to do that .... However, we lack the vision to identify the right players for the right jobs .... Guys such as Pant, if allowed to develop their game, can win the team a tournament but they are on the sidelines .... There should be a plan to reintegrate Pandya, another player who can win Ind a tournament, to international cricket too

The players identified to do specific jobs should  try to do those roles for their IPL teams too. What is likely to happen is everyone does what pleases them. The IPL would be over in May and then there would be a rush to get the combinations right and quest to accommodate some of the has-beens
