Highly overrated films n Tv shows acc to you

I liked the first 1-2 seasons of BBT. Then started watching casually once in a while and then some of the episodes with their girlfriends were pure cringe, totally ruined it.

Was never into HIMYM or Friends.

I would say I find Quentin Tarantino movies a little overrated . I love his movies and they are super fun and entertaining but I don’t need to go back and read trivia online to see why it makes it a masterpiece and all those hidden messages, doesn’t matter to me. When I see his movie it feels like a typical masala movie not a masterpiece. Sometimes I think his movies get more hype then they deserve.

I wouldn’t categorize Bollywood or Other regional cinema as overrated. Indian movies never get rated because 90% lack originality, creativity or  artistic integrity.

So Indian movies is generally seen as low brow entertainment more like WWE or circus type entertainment with all the songand dance routines, over the top drama  and not enough soul.

Even the m good ones are usually knock offs or inspired works.

There is a reason why Indian cinema doesn’t get enough respect elsewhere.

However there is an audience it caters too and entertains them so just like Wrestling or a good circus performance (where no animals are harmed) Indian movies are entertainment without depth so yeah they are not overrated at all but once in a while a great film comes out out of every 1000 films and gets lost in the shuffle, so more like underrated.

The whole under-rated over-rated business is all relative. I think most movies listed by Ankit aren't particularly highly rated in the fist place so how can one call them over-rated :dontknow:

Having said that, some of the shows/movies that came in with huge reputation and I found hard to sit through in recent times were:

Westworld (heavy on predictable programming but tedious as hell)

Burning (Dull South Korean movie about economic anxiety)

I Saw the Devil (Torture Porn)

Mard Ko Dard Nahin Hota (Fantastic trailer but lame execution of a great concept)

Most Ayushmaan "gents problem" Khurana movies

I also find the wank-fest about Tamasha in recent times unbearable. Dangal too was a strictly decent film that was made out to be some sort of a cinematic masterpiece.

Ayushman movies or Dangal are good movies by Indian standard.

They are rated comparitively on the other crap our movie industries keep churning.

Take example of Gully boy, I really wanted to hate that movie but I was entertained by it, had good performances and music and overall was a decent movie. However when it is viewed as a master piece or best foreign film worthy you want to throw up because it is 20 years after that Eminem movie which was made on a similar theme.

@coffee_rules why the troll vote?

You think mainstream Indian cinema needs to be rated to begin with?

I hated the generalization. You didn’t say mainstream, you put 90% of Indian movies are not to be rated. In that case,  That’s true for serious Money industries like Hollywood. Other countries are not economy oriented, movies made for niche audience.
They all work on formulas and tried gags. I would also say most of H movies are not to be rated and made for 13 yr olds, as they cater to economic criteria and not made for purposes of art.

I hate the India movie critiques down rating in comparison with H movies as they have song and dance. We need different lenses for I and H movies

Hollywood mainstream does make a lot of crap but still even if you take something as blatantly commercial as the Marvel universe or Star Wars or any such franchise, they have a certain rules, laws within the make believe universe that we can get engaged in.

Even Pixar movies for kids can make you emotional and tear up by being subtle than SRK moving his face into 1000 different contortions with melodrama.

Also this excuse that Mass Indian audience can not understand good content cinema and only love brainless fights and songs & dance is bs.

Mainstream Hollywood crap is crap but better than Bollywood and South cinema mainstream crap.

The good Hollywood movies usually go on to become trendsetters and change cinema where as most good Indian movie content is either inspired or remade. The real good ones get lost in obscurity.

They are better than the average Indian movie but they are by no means the best mainstream movies being made. With Dangal, there was this huge hype created prior to the release of the movie itself by folks within BW calling it best Hindi movie in last 15 years and some critics rating it better than Lagaan. I don't think Dangal lived up to all that. Ayushmaan comedies are mildly funny with some social commentary thrown in but when I compare them with the likes of Khosla Ka Ghosla/Oye Lucky/Ankhon Dekhi that weren't made all that long ago I start wondering what the fuss is all about. I'd take Udaan/Piku/Ankhon Dekhi/Tumbbad anyday over Dangal and most Ayushmaan movies.

Gully Boy is a well made movie I agree. Very woke as well. No wonder all the critics went crazy.

it doesnt have to be rated among the world cinema but among its own audience only.

But are they all that highly rated even by the local audience? They were huge grossers back in the day and have some nostalgic appeal but most would agree that they haven't aged well at all.

Hollywood and rules? Even they copy, but yes, not as much as Indian 80s and 90s movies. In the age of Internet, they get caught, hence the movies made in last 15 years have the same rules as the H ones Movies like Adhadhun, Masaan, Newton, are as good as some quality H movies that you are comparing. Just say that B and SI movies are not made for your sensibilities. Movies like Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal is as good as lazily made H heist movies.

Any movie even if it is made for purpose of an art can only be called great if it can entertain or engage the viewer.

all super hero movies with more than 20 superheroes :wall:

bond series .. agreeing with  @rkt.india   ( @zen bourne > bond  )

Each Bond actor represents a series (and a time period) so there are like 5-6 series (Lazenby has only 1 film) in the Bond’s world.

You are misunderstanding what I am saying, I love brainless Telugu or Bollywood movies when things align. For example Telugu movies  Pokiri or Julayi are amazing for their repeat value. They were perfect mix of comedy, good songs, action. I can watch those movies again and again when they are on Tv but no way am

I going to call them cinematic classics.

Again you are pointing to exceptions like Andhadhun. I already acknowledged that Indian audience is not dumb and they will appreciate a well made movie.

I didn’t like a movie like Newton though, I felt it was trying too hard.
