India's Greatest ODI cricketer

Kapil - World class ATG all rounder and who gave confidence that India can also win World Cup.

We had lost two warm up matches in 1983, then we came back strongly to beat the ATG WI twice. Then that swashbuckling all time best innings of 175 against Zimbabwe when we were 17/5. The running catch of Viv. wickets and runs in WC. He was a super hero whose motivation, leading from front by giving abnormal performance were major reasons why India won world cup even after a horrible start in warm up.

Not only he was a great ODI player but he also captained the team well for India's first  WC win.

Objectively w/ some subjective elements - MSD.

It is incredible to be keeping wkts for 50 overs + overseeing captaincy for a large part of his career + performing consistently in MO, one of the hardest areas to bat at in ODIs, and at Bevan’s level esp. when it comes to handling pressure, while possessing the flexibility to bat any where in the batting order

Brief comments on other players:

Kapil Dev: Relatively inconsistent but when he did well you felt good. Though was a good motivator, his captaincy was bland. You could almost know who is going to bowl which overs and bat where. In 1989, Srikant became the captain and we saw innovation relatively speaking like Chetan Sharma being promoted up the order v Eng in Nehru Cup. Chetan hit a 100 to win that game

Sachin/Kohli: Great in their specialist field. Kohli captains too but his captaincy is similar to Kapil’s without the motivating elements

While you can find players such as Kapil, Sachin, and Kohli in many of the other teams too, players like MSD are relatively rare

Therefore, the greatest Indian ODI cricketer goes to MSD at this point

Let’s see if Pandya can snatch this title in future

Officially the MS era ends today

One difference b/w Dhoni and Kapil (both multi skill cricketers & World Cup winning captains) can be seen from the two SFs that Ind lost (and where Ind could be considered as the favorite before the game):

  • 1987 vs. Eng: Kapil won the toss and elected to field first. The experienced Kapil walked in with India in trouble. Played a decent knock. All he needed to do was build a p’ship with Azhar but played a stupid shot. Ind was bundled out for 219 with more than 4 overs still to go. Also his captaincy was mundane, allowing Eng to get 230+ runs in the last 40 overs. As a result of that he probably lost his captaincy.
  • 2019 vs. NZ: Again Ind is in trouble. The experienced Dhoni, working with Jadeja and Pandya, almost put Ind across the line.

Kapil could play a good to great knock like 5-10 times in 100 games. Dhoni could do that 25-30 times in 100 games. More importantly, Dhoni knew how to cross the finishing line better! There are not too many cricketers who have insights like Dhoni.

Had he retired after 2015 WC he could have probably been regarded as our greatest ODI player, did lots of damage to his legacy and Team India's fortunes in the next 4 years.

Fyi, below is how Kapil went in his last 5-6 years.

I was planning to cut down on all my forum usage/posting from today till IPL but the Dhoni retirement sucked me in :wall:

Now reverting back to the original plan (I hope there would be no more incidences to suck me in ) ....  If I see a notification, I may respond to it
