Putin or any other powerful Russian don’t interfere in those matters. However I heard only time they made an exception was when Putin personally asked them to cancel a hit they were planning as he owed a big favor to the guy that was supposed to get bumped off and they obliged. He died as the reigning world champion and Mikahil Botvinik replaced him as the next USSR chess great. Paul Keres played suspiciously sub par to Botvinik in the championships. Korchnoi also left Russia but was paranoid about kgb agents trying to assassinate him. So the threat is not imaginary back then and not now Gollum 1
