Patrick Paterson was quickest of all WI fast bowlers and Kapil Dev scored 87 in an odi with him rampaging from one end. Kapil again scored 109 in Hirwani's debuts test in Chennai against all Walsh , Patrick Patterson and  Winston Davis with 156/5 and helped India win that test.Nobody calls that Kapil's  test innings as a monumental knock.

A history lesson for you.

Kapil's 87 against Paterson in odi was one of the best odi innings against a very fast bowler on an uneven pitch, he was the best batsman in that match better than all those WI batsmen including Viv Richards. Shastri who is a very good batsman on his own scored 20 was unable to lay bat on ball while Kapil dev scored 87 out of their 100 run partnership.

That was caliber of Kapil Dev and Botham. When they clicked they would bat better than the top order batsmen. Imran never had that battting ability.

So stop hyping ordinary things .I would  not call any of Imran's test innings as great His 100 against Australia would be his best as he did play well there.

Agree to most of the post.

Clarke was faster than almost all of his team mates. Patterson was quick too than other WI greats. Those two were faster than more successful WI team mates.

No Windies fast bowler of that time was faster than Holding. None. Nada.

What part don’t you agree. Yes I have even read even Steve Waugh’s thoughts about Clarke when he was facing him in county cricket. He was one of the nastiest bowlers  he faced in his career.

Jeff Dujon who kept for all these fast bowlers said Patrick Paterson was the fastest he has ever kept among all those WI greats.

Graham Gooch who is regarded as many among the best batsman against fast bowlers also faced all those greats including Holding said he feared for his life only once that too against Patrick Paterson in Sabina Park in 1986.

He was faster than Holding, he was nastier too.

Patrick Paterson is regarded as fastest by many even in WI not best but fastest.

The part that Clarke wasn't fastest. I have watched him when they toured here in late 70's. Patterson was also one of the fastest. Not at all debating that. Clarke and Patterson were two of the quickest.

Good point regarding Holding. Holding was faster through air, but Clarke and Patterson were nastier. Like Thomson, who wasnt as good as WI greats, but nastier for sure.

Marshall ......the best

Holding ..... In mid / late 70s the fastest , accurate, kept pace in a spell of bowling

Patterson .....very fast at times but not accurate or consistent

Clarke ........ Very fast and nasty  but all over the shop and a nutcase !!!

Watch this video about Patrick Paterson from a man standing behind the wickets.By 1986 Helmets and other protection gear were widely used. I am in no way diminishing Clarke but it is like IPL vs international cricket.

While scoring in IPL is good but I would not call some of those batsmen as great even in T20s.Clarke was great in country cricket,he would have been a very good bowler if he was born in another era.

Kapil Dev did score 100 against same Clarke in 1978 also.

Holding was quick but when he was his quickest, Helmets were not in the game yet, we are talking 1974-76 they were just starting out then,

People underestimate the effect of bounce those WI bowlers used to get, when you read and hear the accounts of batsmen facing them , it felt like a war when WI was in town. When Kenneth Benjamin broke  Manoj Prabhakar's jaw whole Indian lineup including Sachin did not even resist them.I read somehwere from WI players on how Indian batsmen in that innings were so scared that they were not willing to fight.

Good that you have also watched the bowlers of 70's. What wonderful moments to watch so much of variety, the quality and the skill set. Indeed it was tough for the batsman to face the pace bowlers considering all factors. The Bedi decission to declare against Windies is a striking example which frequently recalls in my mind.

That Bedi's declaration is a black mark in Indian cricket. Bedi was a coward to have declared, if you are scared to face fast bowlers don't play the game.Bedi was a moron even in Pakistan he forfeited one match.Facing fast bowling is supposed to hurt , you don't runway from it.

Here is the fastest bowler Sylvester Clarke.

I am not sure how fast Clarke was but in the clip above the commentators said that is the slowest they have seen Clarke bowl so the clip is probably not accurate for judging his pace

Look at that bowling action. With that action, I don't see how he could bowl very quick, bowling with wrong foot. They might have struggled to pick his quick arm action.
