Pant of 2018 was better. The 2020 version of Pant is horrible. He was getting late on every shot he was attempting. Horribly out of touch. Good point. Maybe a lack of tasty desi khaana in Ozzieland will do him some good.

It was quite visible in his game over last 1.5 years that this is something he clearly lacks. If Pant would have got captaincy instead of Iyer, DC won't have made it to playoffs. With him, it's all about the natural ability that he possess. He lacks game awareness and is an irresponsible bat. uhh have you seen DC matches in second half of the tournament? completely lost the gas after an amazing start and huffed and puffed into playoffs after last match against rcb. they only won matches thanks to rabada-nortje's amazing bowling and some blinders from dhawan. Iyer looked clueless anytime they were slightly under pressure and couldn't innovate on the field at all. 22 minutes ago, Majestic said: If DC management including Ponting rewarded Iyer with captaincy spot ahead of Dhawan, Pant, Shaw, Rahane and Ashwin, then there must be good reasons behind it. Praveen Amre recommended to make Iyer as captain when he was with Delhi capitals last year. Amre was also the personal coach who discovered Iyer when he was 12 and later scouted him for DC according to this writeup https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/_/id/30332787/how-mumbai-indians-built-their-ipl-empire so basically Iyer was lucky to have found a believer in the right place and now he is the golden boy for both DC and BCCI. I know that Pant is not competing with Iyer for his test spot, I am just replying to your statement that Iyer was a tier above Pant. In both First class and IPL, Pant has clearly out performed Iyer on pure batting alone.. his wicket keeping is added bonus.

But there is no way in world that Pant can be a better captain than Iyer and here what I am trying to tell is how average Pant is basically. He couldn't even survive and deal with the pressure of fans, has literally finished himself in the process to change his natural game, the guy has no match awareness but all ability and talent. He can regain his form and I wish him best luck for that because 2018 version of Pant will be pivotal for our LOI team down the order at 5-6 but there is no way he has better game awareness and smarter brain than Iyer who till now has played several sensible knocks in ODIs in very lesser chances given to him.
The Realist Posted November 24, 2020 Posted November 24, 2020 Iyer is mediocrity personified. Limited skillset and no outstanding facet to his game. Timid body language. The invisible man when captaining. The poor man's Rahane. zen and Suhaan 1 1
Gollum Posted November 25, 2020 Posted November 25, 2020 Iyer does seem to get unusual hate here. Hasn't done much wrong in his international career, killer stats in domestic. Due process is being followed, too much undeserved criticism methinks, after he gets enough chances and fails sure bash him but not when he is a long way from test debut. One thing I can guarantee, he will shine on Indian pitches, might even match Che-Kohli in our conditions.......after what he did to Aussies (esp our nemesis Lyon) in the 2017 warm up fixture....peak SRT did something similar to Aussies in 1998 for Mumbai. Adamant Posted November 25, 2020 Posted November 25, 2020 Iyer has done nothing wrong but is that now the criteria to get into the test team ahead of the likes of Gill, shaw or even eeshwaran, panchal etc. Secondly i am not really sure whether he wil be able to score runs even in odis and t20s.. These fast paced bouncy pitches don't really suit his style of batting.

This Indian team is so close to greatness, but then something or the other happens, or they score own-goals and miss out. That was a laughable post. You sounded like Ravi Shastri there. It is a very good Indian team with lots of loopholes irrespective of personnel.
SK_IH Posted November 25, 2020 Posted November 25, 2020 If Iyer is indeed the backup, it's a prudent decision. He has a very good first class record as well I think.
Majestic Posted November 25, 2020 Posted November 25, 2020 Gill is obviously the batsmen of the next generation for us. Rahul is immensely talented but let's see how he does in the coming years. Iyer is a rich man Rahane in LOs IMO. For tests, let's wait. Rahane had a dream start in test but is not averaging 42 after 65 tests.
Suhaan Posted November 25, 2020 Posted November 25, 2020 (edited) He has his backers,he will leapfrog Gill and others and play with your nerves, nothing but a torcher Edited November 25, 2020 by Suhaan
Straight Drive Posted November 25, 2020 Posted November 25, 2020 Iyer a big innings player in domestic cricket and he has done well for many seasons. He has an uncomfortable zone against pacers but no batsman is perfect. It would be unfair to say Ranji cricket records are irrelevant. Agarwal who has been a star in domestics showed that why it is important to back players who shine in domestic cricket. If Ranji performances are so irrelevant then on what basis and which tournaments should players be selected for tests ?

Ranjis can't be overlooked ,his stats are great and has done well in lois he played but i really don't want him to leapfrog other contenders in the longer format as their is a possibility of that to happen as he comes from Mumbai and is currently leading an IPL side,i know people here will bring Shaw here for the region he comes from
