If he does well in ODIs..  Our TM may go for him at no 4 after Kohli departs.  Then witness the dance on the crease when Starc & Cummins go for the short stuff

Nah, he's just a reserve player. Rahul, gill, shaw will all be preffered over him.

Gill may not even get a game.  Rahul is surety once Kohli departs.  Shaw will Open with Mayank.  Imagine Iyer scoring runs in ODIs then he'll be surely ahead of Gill.

Another Karun Nair vs Vihari thing will happen

He will have to play the practice matches first. Unless he scores a century in the 3day matches, I don't see management playing Iyer.

in fact I don't think even Gill will debut in this series unless one of our batsman get injured

it will be shaw as opener and Rahul in place of Kohli. Rahul can get a 50 or two in mcg and will play rest of the series

Iyer has a stellar FC record. May have been his technical deficiencies but is a proper middle order batsman batting at 4-5 for Mumbai/IndiaA/India (in LOIs). Welcome addition to the test squad and will push Rahane and Vihari for a place.

If the selectors want to pick from someone already in Aus (may be due to quarantine requirements), why not wait for the ODI series to end to see how the batsmen are shaping up  :dontknow:

Nah even if iyer scores centuries he won't be ahead of gill in the pecking order.

Please Remember that Kl Rahul didn't get a spot in nz tests squad even after fabulous performance in lois and ipl.

KL Rahul didn't get picked in NZ tests coz he wasn't named in Test squad.  Australia tour is 4 test series.  So opportunity may come for everyone if things go south in First 2 games.

Mumbai lobby is going to shove him down our throats, the most pathetic player ever projected as future leader, never ever happened in Indian cricket in recent times

His mediocrity is getting rewarded everyday

Chill down! He has an impressive resume for a guy who is 25 years old. Imagine Pandey, Rayudu, Jadhav, Pant or Samson captaining their IPL team. Iyer is a tier above them.

He is the youngest player to captain his IPL franchise team to finals and in his first shot he took them to playoffs, averages 52 in FC cricket, made full use of the only chance given to him in LOIs while guys like Pandey or Pant kept getting extra chances and have yet not established themselves. A good fielder as well.

Will chill down once i see him handling pace and bounce well in Australia, didn't mean to downplay his FC record

Neither did i compare him with Pandey(not his competition)

Well Pant has a century in Australia,so please don't drag his name with Iyer who may debut,Iyer is a good fielder

I will reserve my opinion till the time he proves his worth against decent quicks in pace friendly conditions

Definitely he's a tier above Jadhav,Rayudu but guys like Gill aren't lagging that much

In what way is Iyer a tier above Pant? If you remove his test match record, Pant has higher FC avg than Iyer and he is a wicket keeper batsman. Picking iyer as captain was just a dumb decision from DC management

Pant doesn't have match awareness and cricketing brain to be awarded captaincy at this stage. It was quite visible in his game over last 1.5 years that this is something he clearly lacks. If Pant would have got captaincy instead of Iyer, DC won't have made it to playoffs. With him, it's all about the natural ability that he possess. He lacks game awareness and is an irresponsible bat.

Both Iyer and Pant were given similar run after 2019 World Cup in ODIs,with Pant given a position at no.4 and Iyer at no.5, but Iyer delivered some good performance and was rewarded a position higher while Pant was demoted after poor performance. Then in NZ, Iyer further consolidated his spot by hitting a  century while Pant got dropped because of not being able to make any serious impact.

If DC management including Ponting rewarded Iyer with captaincy spot ahead of Dhawan, Pant, Shaw, Rahane and Ashwin, then there must be good reasons behind it. Having said that, he lacks the hitting ability of Pant but is clearly a more responsible batsmen with better game awareness.

As for test spot, Pant's competition is with keeper batsman not specialist batsman.

In LOIs, one may could agree with that, but man ... after Pant's test batting in Australia the last time the team was there, it is a tough argument to make.  He hunkered down and did what the team needed him to do (36, 30 (highest in the innings), 39, 33, 159*).

His fitness has been all over the place.  Even in IPl he was not gathering clearly & giving byes.  Pant of 2018 was better.  The 2020 version of Pant is horrible.  He was getting late on every shot he was attempting.  Horribly out of touch.
