Check what over he came in

Already made a thread with his good innings showing all time he came in with 15-20 overs left

nothing to do with manju, he has improved but he needs time to get in unlike pandya

KL has been outstanding at 5, ppl forget he has a 100 at 4 in a t20 game and runs at 4 in IPL also

HE can open but he bats like rahane. He is perfect in middle

Look I understand Jadeja needs time to get his eyes in before he starts hitting. But if you have Pant and Pandya at 5 & 6, run rate will hardly be an issue unless ofcourse you are chasing 350+ for which anyways Pant and Pandya will have to bat higher to give us a chance to win. Both are attacking batsman and better hitters than Jadeja.

It is like England who have Stokes at 5, Buttler at 6, Woakes at 7. Will you send Woakes( who is similar to Jadeja) higher just because Buttler can hit from ball 1? No because Buttler is a better batsman and he should bat higher.

What you are talking about KL makes sense in T20s as he generally eats ball as opener in T20s and things don't work with Rohit at other end but in ODIs, that way of batting is fine. ODIs are longer formats than T20s and it's not just about hitting.

My ODI batting will be:-

Rohit

Gill( Dhawan as backup)

Kohli

KL

Pant( Iyer as backup in M.O)

Pandya

Jadeja

This should be top 7 with safer bets like Dhawan and Iyer as backups. Jadeja's backup can be Sundar although I am not too sure about his bowling in ODIs and late hitting also. TM will probably give it to Sundar as he has been tried in other two formats already.

What is the rationale for not having Iyer in the playing XI? Just that he isn't X-Factor or whatever that means? The guy averages 45 with a SR of 100.74 with 9 50+(8 50's and 1 100) scores in 19 innings. Not sure how he gets dropped.

Just take a look at this scorecard and the opp bowlers were Hastings, Boland,Marsh & Faulkner.. basically a tier 2 bowling line up.. and the way they hyped his century.. that too he scored it after a strong platform by the openers.. when Rohit got out we were 231/3 chasing 100 more in 16 Overs.. it was hyped as if this was one of the greatest innings and he kept getting chances across formats - odis / T20s & even IPL ( he did score plenty in domestic and one crucial knock in a final against tier 4 bowlers Awana & Karanveer Singh of Kings X1 Punjab :hysterical: )  but the so called experts always perceived him as a top class batsman courtesy this century against tier 2 or tier 3 bowlers :phehe: )

Iirc he was making a comeback into the team in that series after some time so considering that it was not a bad innings at all.

After this innings, he had to pave way for Yuvraj comeback into the team

Wait, what happened suddenly? First I was sad he retired than I was scared if he was selected (possible under RD). Anything I am missing?

simple - KL-Pant-Pandya all are better batsman then him so no spot is left for him

With Sky, Pant, Pandya , Jadeja he has no chance of selection again in Indian cricket. Hope he wins another  Ranji Trophy for Karnataka

Kohli, if we ignore his catching abilities. and if we focus just on catching, the likes of dravid should be there.

I actually feel Azhar should be much higher up if we consider true all-round fielding. Except for last parts of career, he was brilliant at slip and as a close-in fielder to spinners. And he was very good in covers, but also in the outfield. true all-round fielder. someone like Jaddu on the other hand has not done well in slips/gully in the matches I saw.

The list is probably not on merit purely. Perhaps I would still have Jadeja, Raina and Pandey in my top 3 but post that it could change.

I would probably not have Kohli as it is futile to leave out catching ability.

I think I missed out Ajay Jadeja there in that list. What do you think?
