Inspired by @zen's thread, many people think of only Bollywood while talking about Indian films.. There's a plethora of great content in non-Hindi Indian films - Tamil, Malayalam in particular and more recently Telugu. I've heard great things about the Bengali film industry as well..

What are your favorite movies from these film industries?

Often, these industries don't get the recognition that they deserve. SRK and Rohit Shetty stereotyping some random masala flicks only adds to the bad perception.

There are brilliant content oriented movies all the way back from 60s-70s till date that deserve praise. Honestly, I find Bollywood content lot less intriguing.

Here are some top of the mind:

Great content  :

  • Most Maniratnam and Balachander movies of the 80s and 90s (Nayagan and Unnal mudiyum thambi / Rudraveena stand out for me)..Davayan was a poor excuse for a remake
  • Kadhalikka Neramilla, Anbe Sivam, Mozhi, Karuthamma, Mahanadi

Good entertainers (last decade) :

  • Baahubali, Eeda
  • Premam, Drishyam, Bangalore Days
  • Duruvangal 16, Ratsasan, Kalayna Samayal Sadam, Yuddham Sei, Thani Oruvan, Vikram Vedha

No way off, Aishwarya Rai's first movie, with Mani Ratnam directing and Mohanlel playing the role of MGR, Prakash Raj playing the role of Karunanithi and Aishwarya playing the role of Jayalalitha. Kind of a biopic.

Movies made by K.Vishwanath

Promoted  Indian culture- dance, classical music and other arts

Told stories about simple people in a simple setting.

Got the best performances out of even some commercial stars

Had music in his movie that has lasted the test of time

Clean family movies with no vulgarity

The women in his movies are actually shown in such a respectful and strong  way.

Made artsy subjects commercially successful and watchable.

Shankarabaram starred a retired classical dancer and a 50+ year old man playing a 70 year old and made it an all time classic. one of the greatest filmmakers in Indian cinema.
