He has the highest ceiling out of all batsmen in the world. By far. What a talent he is. Nothing but praise for this wonderful talent. 

 

His technique is air tight. Bullet proof. No real weakness. You can say many have had glorious days early in their careers. But you don't get to smack around peak Cummins and peak hazlewood like they are chump bowlers if you weren't a world class talent. 

a shame that he has only played 4 tests and that too mostly low down the order. should have gotten more tests and at no. 6 (min). rahane should have been dispensed with long ago

No more puli sadham. Thayir sadham. Needs more andaa, leg piece chicken and good old beef. He will get stringer I hope. Current sundar is better than prime rahane. That should tell you how high the ceiling is for this guy. Prime rahane as much as we hate him, he was a decent player tbh. Above average.

yes, peak rahane was pretty good, especially overseas. had a career avg of nearly 50 at 30 tests. had some memorable knocks.

Sundar's only way to get into side is as a bowling all rounder. Not as a batsman as we have plethora of specialist batsmen from various under-19 batches.  Ravi shastri is probably using himself as an example. He was batting at 10 or 11 when he started. Then in no time he started opening the batting. He had the temperament to open the innings.  He averaged 44 as opener in Tests.  He probably sees something similar in Sundar. Hence this suggestion.  This means he will have to give less priority to his bowling. We have to first understand why Sundar was picked He was picked for his bowling not batting Infact when he was picked for Tests he was considered a replacement for Ashwin. Credit to him he showed commendable temperament as a batsman and surprised us.

Sundar has to do well in Ranji trophy for his state team and then he will be knocking on the doors for national selection.

He played those 4 tests only as a stop-gap option.

He needs to do well to really displace the existing veterans. Rahane is too experienced and was considered as SENA specialist not long ago. One cannot simply displace Rahane with not much runs under your belt in the domestics.

Don't know about Ravi Shastri but Sundar has always played as a specialist batsman who bowled some from the junior days, even in u19 WC. Sundar was an opening batsman by trade but early IPL success labelled him a bowler.

The modern era standards are such that all your top 6 batsman should strike at 90+. Can Washi do that, this is a question. We can play him at 5 or 6 but he must score at strike rate of 90+.

Rahul 89( strikes better at 4-5)

My take- i believe his power game will improve with time,still has the right intent to score

not sure avesh is currently cut out for ODIs. would rather see him first get a shot in T20s. there are some bowlers like avesh (even bishnoi) who master T20 and then ODIs. thakur is not a good first, but I believe that deepak chahar would be a better fit. this would a balanced 6-bowler attack with batting until 9.

9. bishnoi/markande [or rahul chahar if he gets form]

more promise in future with sindhu at 6, bawa at 7, hangu at 8, and so on.

My favorite thing about Sundar's batting is his clutch nature. Very cool, calm. But don't expect him to bat like Pandya, Yusuf Pathan. He is not a slogger.
