Malgudi Days ( Shankar Nag )

There are rare pieces of art work that stand the test of time. There are even rarer cases which get better with time. I am sure most 80s and 90s kids know the theme song of Malgudi days. But as I watched the whole series again, I developed a fresh perspective and appreciation for the genius of Shankar Nag, RK Narayan and the wonderful technicians and actors. 
 

Remains visually stunning and authentic. Some fades and transition shots are just beyond the possibility of any of the modern wannabes. Acute framing with great attention to foreground and background. 

 

Brilliant writing with no specific message delivered or audience spoon fed. We live with the characters just as we would with any of the family members seeing them go through experiences and evolve. 
 

I can’t think of many films in India that capture space and time so seamlessly. We are transported into this fictitious little town experiencing moments with these everyday characters. Made with lot of love but little bias. It really is taking you back to Bharat and it’s roots in its own way. 
 

and the score. What more can one say. I often go back to this series to just take me back to simpler times. It’s almost a cleansing meditative experience. I recommend everyone see it if you have not. If you have, give it another shot.

But we Indians should stop romanticizing our poverty, backwardness.

 

I look forward to the times when India reaches a state of extraordinary eminence as a nation and series is made that romanticizes the unmatched ingenuity and brilliance of the Indian mind and our great culture. 

 

Sadly, none of us maybe around to experience those times.

Malgudi days is not about poverty or backwardness as a central theme. Characters there are minimalist.

I know. I have watched each of the episodes multiple times. The central theme is around moral lessons, societal ills and the simplicity of life in a fictitious south indian village during the British Raj.

Special mention to RK Narayan (elder brother of RK Laxman, what a family ) whose source material was adapted. One of the best Indian writers in English, read plenty of short stories by him and Mulk Raj Anand in high school. Legends, all of them. Shankar Nag gone too soon, could have taken post-liberalization Indian television to a much better place.

Sadly, none of us maybe around to experience those times. 

I hope our eminence is not defined by western standards. I hope we get there on standards we set for our civilization. 
 

When I see the series, I don’t see this as celebration of poverty. But India is way more complex than western binary outlook.
