neeraj chopra maybe but then his case is similar to kamalpreet's today.

Are there any out and out medal chances in wrestling? Like we had with Susheel last time around.

man this also shows the disparity between asian/cwg vs olympics

kamalpreet with this performance would be cwg/asian gold medalist.

asian games - badminton, tt, wrestling, boxing are legit

commonwealth - swimming, rowing, hockey (gold)

If you look at this Olympics too, Indian athletes look best in the world up to a certain point and it is a good sign that only at the final hurdle when the competition goes to that next level up they are getting outclassed. Which means that they are not that far behind, just need that one extra push and the medals will

come.

Look at badminton for example, even the world no.1 will be wary of Sindhu because she is that quality world class athlete and the difference between her and the rest is not that large. Athletics there is still some gap.

more than rankings look if they have world championship medals and asian games/asian championship medals (asian medals in wrestling are legit).

cwg wrestling medals are bogus (not intend to demean but all the heavyweights dont play there)

Very creditable. Most of these guys as Asian and CW gold medalists as well. Standard in wrestling is pretty high in those competitions. Japs, Chinese and the Central Asian countries to contend with in Asian games... England, Aus and african countries in the CW.

Just to think of it her pb would have won her silver. Question is are these pb s in events with less pressure ?

Mostly depends on weather conditions. In highly competitive groups, with favorable conditions, top athletes like Kaur can easily better their personal bests. Not sure if any of the finalists had their season bests or personal bests today given the conditions

yup. we really need to have some pet events which hare guarantee medal prospects (the two hockey ones can be easily) and then increase funding in the others so 15-20 years down the line they are what archery, boxing, wrestling, badminton are now.

chinese have done it with making badminton, weightlifting etc their pet events and now branching out into athletics.

in wrestling russia and central asia are gold class.

england, aus, africans not so good.

quality cwg events are swimming, rowing, cycling etc.

Where we win nothing.

I think we can do well in cycling honestly but we lack the infrastructure for it unfortunately.

yup.

in asian games its more positive as we win some badminton, wrestling, boxing so that translates to the olympics.

the day we start winning those medals in cwg (sprinting, long distance running etc too) they will translate to olympics.

I remember some Kenyans and Nigerians being pretty good - esp in the women's events. Not too many central asians there.

dont know that much about womens. although sakshi malik had defeated a central asian last time.

maybe because they are realtively more conservative muslim countries (ofc nothing like arabs) there is a disparity between the men (which is gold class) and the women?

iran also very good at wrestling and japan (especially women's) so asian game medals are a good barometer. ofc olympic medals are tougher but is still a decent gauge of quality.

cwg wrestling is a joke. i checked last time's. india medalled in every category (men/women's) and won 5 golds. even pakistan medaled. :giggle:
