What about track and filed you don't need to be rich to run.  What happened to all those facilities India spent mo0ney on for the Commonwealth games?

We have the infrastructure, it's not like we are going to start from scratch.

Neeraj Chopra, we are getting strong in javelin. Anju Bobby George was a legend of long jump, doping by Russians was an issue those years and they were the only athletes who consistently got the better of her. Hima Das may peak in 3 years time. Sadly not many track and field stars from Asia, genes do play a big part there.

Look at the 100m, 200m, 400m starting line ups in the final. Or leaders of long distance races. You will notice the trends. Few field events up for grabs (competition mainly from Europe), javelin is a start.

All these things are good to talk but not logical in real world because we aren't a sporting society and country. Sports are not encouraged by families. Everyone needs to become IAS, MBA, doctor, Engineer, CA.

Athletics is also a lot about genes. Africans dominate there.

How would you quantify quality of life and development , if athletes and sportspersons are not able to perform and bring glory as much as they would have liked, or have been able to? Without sports infrastructure, training, diet and fitness, mental conditioning facilities available as much as any other developed country. How else would you be able to quantify development? ' Status of achieving Superpower" can be debated and "industrial development" can also be argued upon(though every country in the world  aims to construct factories and buildings wherever possible, it's a global scenario). But any country which aims to be developed or achieve a decent standard of quality of life, should also consider having/achieving a thriving sporting culture as part of their goals.

Quality of life and development can be quantified simply as follows

1. Every single citizen of India should not have any lack of quality food, clothing and shelter even the poor

2. India and its citizens should not face any trouble of cross border terrorism or illegal immigration from outside

3. Indian citizens should not undergo usury and corruption from within the government and their banking institution

I can go on and on with more conditions. Sports will not be on the list of enhancing quality of life and development. Sports was invented for training soldiers during peace times. So other sports like tennis, table tennis, badminton, cycling, handball, football, golf, etc are useless and only a means of passing time.

Sports is called Jue, Juego, Gioco in most Latin based languages which also denotes gambling. In Sanskrit and Hindi, Jua means gambling. So there's an ugly side to sports as many sports have legalized gambling. gambling is a vice in ancient societies and as you must know, its the same in Indian culture. So it may not be just a time pass but can also be argued that it seriously impedes development

Whatever said and done, must say Summer Olympics is such a spectacular event. FIFA WC, ICC WC, Grand Slams are enjoyable for sure but watching the best from every country (from all continents) competing in one place is special, and such a large variety of events, always something interesting going on.

My tryst with Olympics started in 2000 Sydney, Cathy Freeman lighting the torch (didn't know the significance back then), still going strong.

This is very true, Indian families are still stuck in their old ways, this can be seen in the West as well. Indians only like to live in the same suburb/tows etc as other Indians. They don't like mixing. not all of them but the majority.
