Many times, you may find music directors recycling their background scores in films or using similar themes. Once in a while you come across films with scores that make you take notice as they create magic on screen, impacting the overall quality of the film. Below are some of the top background scores that I have heard recently: Dharmatma (1975): The score is by Kalyanji Anandji. It is a FK film so you would expect it to be good on various factors but Dharmatma score goes above those expectations especially for a film of 70s, where many times, filmmakers used late 60s type score. The work done on this album is extraordinary with specific themes designed for Dharmatma, the titular character, and various other sequences including ones with Pathani dance music. It is a good film to listen to. The cherry on the cake is the theme for Afghanistan sequences - Link Pakeezah (1972): Background score by Naushad (Its memorable songs were done by Ghulam Mohammad). Excellent use of Indian music as score. In various sequences, the film has great sets, dialogues and actors, but the score helps to create a magical environment for those sequences - Link Don (1978): Score by Kalyanji Anandji. The film relies by and large on the amazing Don theme - Link Other notable scores, in the order of release: Johny Mera Naam (1970). Kalyanji Anandji. Excellent theme Sholay (1975): R.D. Burman. The action sequences come to life with its foot tapping background score Qurbani (1980): Kalyanji Anandji. Brilliant overall score in general Rang De Basanti (2006): A.R. Rahman. Rahman type of scores) and the other is great both when you watch the film and when you just listen to it (when driving for e.g.). Just watch the climax scene when Jackie is watching Amir-Urmila reunite and there is a soulful music and then as he laughs and decides to move on, the ayi re ayi re tone picks up. It is goosebump worthy. People who grew up in the 80’s-90’s don’t realize AR Rehman changed the definition of sound.
