I think he doesn't trust his own defense.  Goes for shots which are uncalled for under those circumstances.   Even Sehwag was agressive but had a solid defense, which pant lacks.     Being young is not an excuse for throwing away your wicket in bizzare fashion every time.  As u said, it was indeed a match losing knock.   Had he spent more time at the crease, result could hv been different as there was Vihari at other end who had settled by then.

Such inconsistency with young players overseas.Specially these type of players. They'll win tough games and then lose them too. Got to back them.

 

Its the technical specialists and seniors who should be consistent but they aren't

How is he overrated, how many Asian keepers have scored 100s in England,Australia. He has scored 3 100s in first 27 tests.Gilchrist scored 4 in first 27 tests. He is still the best keeper from Asia . Stop your nonsense about him being overrated.

 

Dhoni has 6 100s in 90 tests.

India head coach Rahul Dravid has said the team management will have conversations with Rishabh Pant over his shot selection, even as they continue backing his natural aggression with the bat. Pant was out for a duck in India's second innings in Johannesburg, edging Kagiso Rabada behind after charging out of his crease.

 

"We know Rishabh plays positively and he plays in a particular manner and that has got him a little bit of success," Dravid said in his post-match press conference. "But yeah, of course there are times when we're going to have some level of conversations with him around, just a little bit of maybe just selection of the time to play that [shot].

 

"No one's ever going to tell Rishabh not to be a positive player, not to be an aggressive player, but sometimes it's just a question of picking and choosing the time to do that. I think when you just come in, maybe giving yourself a bit more time might be a little bit more advisable, but look, in the end we know what we're getting with Rishabh - he is a really positive player, he's someone who can change the course of a game very quickly for us, so you naturally won't take that away from him and ask him to become something very different. Sometimes it's just about figuring out what is the right time to maybe attack or maybe play out a slightly difficult period that sets the game up for you or sets the innings up.

Last 2 years. Rishab pant's performance away from home

 

14 matches 22 innings 438 runs 19.90 average  1 fifty

 

Even the 1 fifty came when platform was set by top order. 

 

As a keeper his primary job is keeping. Nobody is expecting him to churn out 100s. But he has to do the basic job like giving company to top order while seeing off old ball. Even 40 runs would do.

Sydney test just  missed the range  i guess. I just used 2 year window in cricinfo. You could add that too. But still it is poor.

My bad. Original filter batting from 6 to 11.  I corrected it. Now he is averaing 27. May be he should bat at 5? His 97 and 89* came when he batted at 5.

IMO, Pant should bat at 5 in SC, WI, and Oz, at 6 in Eng/NZ (batting pitches) at 7 in SEN (bowling friendly pitches). Reasons: He has the game to succeed at 5 in SC, WI and Oz and also he won't run out of partners and thus take stupid risks. In SEN, his game is not suited for 6 on bowling pitches. We need to find a batting AR (preferably seamer) who can play at 6. Alternatively, Jaddu could be sole spinner and play at 6.

If Thakur can take his batting seriously he can bat. He has the natural flair. He just has to do justice to his batting potential.  If he stays fit and if Sundar can come back complexion will look very different.

Thakur is frustrating,plays good shots and then gets out. Even first innings he looked good. Defensive game needs work

Pant can redeem himself in the 2nd innings.  A sensible counter attacking knock will help India big time. A 70 odd would do. Let us see how he does.

Let's worry no more.  He is like a piece of carbon ... put enough pressure to perform for team, and he turns into a diamond.  I swear I will never ask for any thing ... not one ... from this guy.  What a player!!
