goose Posted October 18, 2021 Posted October 18, 2021 Another world cup another India-Pakistan fix. A contest the ICC has admitted it ensures takes place at every world cup due to the revenue it brings. There is no coincidence these sides end up in the same group every time. How do we feel about that? When I heard the revelation 5 years ago i thought it was a disgrace. I haven't changed my view.
nevada Posted October 18, 2021 Posted October 18, 2021 I wish it were fixed the other way - with the 2 teams never in the same group, with the possibility of playing each other only in a knockout game. It's not just some ideological cold war between the two countries. Lives are being lost, people getting slaughtered and living under constant threat. The less we play against a terror enabler, the better it is. SRT100 1
jf1gp_1 Posted October 18, 2021 Posted October 18, 2021 Here is how I view it, every few years we give them an opportunity which brings hope, then after 4 to 7hrs of agony we walk all over them, leaving an entire nation in mourning. Oh such joy. TheWall 1

Naah. Let the ICC milk the revenue cow. Its not just going to them, in total anyway. Of course money will skew such scheduling choices. Its a fact of life.
Serpico Posted October 18, 2021 Posted October 18, 2021 A. The revenue goes to icc not Pakistan. This is better for the sport we love B. We will easily win and make them seethe, which is cool and good C. The border situation and the terror situation will not change even 0.001% whether we play them in a wc match or not
goose Posted October 18, 2021 Author Posted October 18, 2021 i do not like it one bit. prior to the revelation in 2016, news that these two were in the same group used to excite me. i felt cheated. how can the ICC take their fans for a ride like that? now we know the deal, it's still a disgrace. how dare they. the drawing of sides in a competition should not be fixed. what else will they fix in the name of money? where does it stop. many will say this is not exactly match fixing. i don't know, it's very close. as for the politics, India is a willing participant in this fix. have they no shame given their bilateral stance? fine, agree to ICC matches, but to willfully fix it? it's disgusting

This is why cricket struggles for credibility as a sport. Can you imagine Argentina and Brazil or France and Germany always being drawn in the same groups at every football tournament? Its ridiculous, either have a proper open drawing of teams or admit its fixed and that cricket is a wannabe sport. As well as the fixing its getting boring play the same old teams every tournament. goose 1

One of the reasons it has become a big draw is because we don’t play bilateral cricket with them anymore. Therefore every ICC clash brings together anticipation and excitement. Had we played them in bilateral series - I don’t think ICC would draw such a schedule. Maybe, maybe not. Under_Score 1

This is such a tired argument. Absolutely nothing 'hypocrifical' or shameful about BCCI acquiesing to ICC scheduling. Be aware that in most sports, countries do not have the option to individually boycott any country and are forced to play them or face a ban from the sport. The fact that Cricket's organizational structure provides that flexibility for bilateral increase/decrease in scheduling, is not to be taken for granted. Its a straight-forward arrangement - BCCI plays 'nice' with ICC tournament scheduling, and ICC stays out of India's way when it comes to the ongoing boycott of bilateral cricket. There is absolutely no reason to push for a 100% boycott in ICC tournaments - that would be cutting off your own nose to spite your face. I can see greenbros making this selfserving argument about 'hypocrisy' or shame. But don't understand when others make it. rangeelaraja 1

coffee_rules Posted October 18, 2021 Posted October 18, 2021 (edited) This is tie-fixing, I do not like one bit. If it happens by chance, let it be. But every ICC event, Aise bhikari hain kya ICC? They get 90% of revenue from BCCI. If ICC has a problem with India's bi-lateral cricket policy with Pakistan, let them take it up with BCCI and impose sanctions etc. Let's see how it goes. BCCI should oppose this tie-fixing, but BCCI gets part of that money too. So, the mongrels go for it and fans lap it up to revel the rivalry. Edited October 18, 2021 by coffee_rules goose 1

Is it schedule-fixing by the ICC to increase their profits? of course it is. But then that's the norm in all sport. Money makes the world go around. Not sure as a financebro why you have an issue with this.

Not sure as a financebro why you have an issue with this. that wasn't the main thrust of the post. India and Pakistan and the ICC are all willful participants in this fix and all should be ashamed. money does make the world go round, but the beauty of sport is to escape that wretched world just for one day. it's not much to ask.
sandeep Posted October 18, 2021 Posted October 18, 2021 Just now, goose said: India and Pakistan and the ICC are all willful participants in this fix and all should be ashamed. They don't control the schedule that the ICC makes - and as I pointed out, if India rocks the gravy train by making public noises against it, that carries a cost too. what exactly do you expect BCCI to do about this? Never expected you to just hurl empty criticism like this. I mean, its fine to dislike a policy stance, but what are the viable options here? rangeelaraja 1
