dilliboy Posted November 1, 2021 Posted November 1, 2021 India has always been a powerhouse for spin whether it is batsmen who have complete mastery over it or producing WC spinners in all formats. But our seasoned batsmen like Rohit and Kohli struggle to get spin away these days while we don't have any wicket taking spinners. It's incredible to see that even NZ and South Africa - 2 countries never renowned for producing decent spinners have a much more potent spin bowling attack than India. Where is the problem - is it purely selection, tactics or a lack of talent?
zen Posted November 1, 2021 Posted November 1, 2021 Need to promote proper players who can smash spin … Issue could be the old style of batting where you try to milk the spinners, allowing them to settle down to pick up wkts and/or get their overs out quickly.

Mayank Sky Dhawan Tewatia Venky iyer All can dish spin
Lone Wolf Posted November 1, 2021 Posted November 1, 2021 Slog sweeps & reverse sweeps should be mandatory Stroke in every batsman. Indian batsman don't have that. Mayank has brilliant batswing & quick reflexes to reach the pitch of the ball vs spin. No other player in India comes closer to how he plays spin. Sidhu Vibes. Vk1 1
IndianRenegade Posted November 1, 2021 Posted November 1, 2021 There are two ways to handle spin: 1. The traditional way is to read what the bowler is doing and play accordingly, we seem to have lost that skill with the loss of Sachin, Sehwag & GG. 2. The other more unorthodox way is to negate the spin, employ sweeps & reverse sweeps. Disrupt the line & length of the bowler with sweeps, but it has its risks. May be we have a couple of batsman who can do this in the team? Pant, SKY. Considering our top heavy batting order, the inability of our top 3 to do this we are already in a position we can take too many risks. We need someone at the top who can play spin well too.
rkt.india Posted November 1, 2021 Posted November 1, 2021 We have always struggled against spin in T20 cricket. I remember even in 2007 against NZ, it was the slow nonspin bowling of Daniel Vettori had blocked our run scoring.

Picking random guys from IPL would not help as we are seeing this world cup. Varun C, SKY all IPL stars are wetting their pants here. This world cup is actually a lesson not to go by hype of IPL. Likes of Tewatia & Venky Iyer wont buy a run here against bowlers of this calibre. The biggest issue in India now is lack of domestic cricket due to Covid. We should always select quality players from domestic cricket. For 2023 world cup, create a core group of proven performers from now and stick with them (like we did in 2011). Likes of Shaw, Gill etc is a must in every format. Yes they will also fail but due to their pedigree, in the long run they will reap benefits. Sticking with Tulleybaaz like SKY, Tewatia, Venky Iyer will not do any good.
New guy Posted November 1, 2021 Posted November 1, 2021 It also takes guts to attack spin. Sachin, sehwag, ganguly, sidhu, and so many more used to attack spinners in over 1 itself, sometimes ball 1, they sometimes got out. Today not only do our players not have guts, they play 2 overs like theg are scared, even those who try like Pant are abused and blamed if they fail. rkt.india, cricketfan28 and Vijy 1 2

Sandeep99 Posted November 1, 2021 Posted November 1, 2021 (edited) 1. Lack of technique and thereby self belief 2. Inability to rotate strike 3. Horrible miscalculations You need to alter the lengths of spinners and not stay still and wait for them to get you out. India also do this in test cricket where we simply allow Lyons, Moeens to bowl at their whim and eventually get out. Be a little unorthodox and try to sweep the ball so the bowler might do something different and provides a half tracker to be cut/pulled away. Only Rohit, SKY and to an extent Rahul play sweep in the current line up. The rest are simply sitting ducks waiting to be massacred. Edited November 1, 2021 by Sandeep99 Vijy 1
dilliboy Posted November 1, 2021 Author Posted November 1, 2021 I am not merely talking about batting.. Where are the wicket taking spinners in LOI? Seems Kulcha is out of favour now.. Who do we turn to? Chakravarty surely isn't someone for the long haul.. Maybe invest in someone like Bishnoi?

Anil Kumble was never a great turner of the ball or never as talented as somelike like Qadir or Warne, but he showed character second to none and eventually succeeded. Ashwin is also similar. We need to identify bowlers with that pedigree to succeed. From whatever I've seen of Bishnoi, he doesn't mind tossing it up even after getting hit for a six. We have something to work with there. The idea is identify such cricketers and work with them.

But he also has some issues with spin but no where near as bad as kohli. What is weird is rohit dispatched spinners in that spitting cobra back in India against England. He was absolutely phenomenal. Perhaps he comprised his short format game for test cricket? That's what i feel.
