Why do I feel Ganguly is indulging in favoritism?

 

This Rathour guy debuted in that very same 1996 England tour where Ganguly debuted as well. Was an absolutely pathetic opening batsman with zero footwork. Crapped his pants multiple times against a mediocre bowler like Dominic Cork. Watching Cork getting him edging to the slips countless times in that series was an embarrassment. 

 

I am also hearing the new bowling coach is going to be Paras Mhambrey - yet another failure who debuted in that same 1996 England tour as well. Had a very ugly bowling action and not much pace, yet another epitome of mediocrity.

Rathore was selected by Kohli and Sastry for being their yes men. Ganguly has nothing to do with it actually but we need to see whether he sits quietly or get proper set if coaches that we lack today.

 

As far as favouritism is concerned, Ganguly always had his choices during his captaincy day but he ensured that somewhere merit plays a role and it's not just all hype. Think about Sehwag, Zaheer, Nehra, Yuvraj, Harbhajan, Kaif - all were Ganguly's boys but everyone of them deserved their chances and most of them have been very successful atleast in one format. As long as favouritism is based on merit it is still manageable.

Regarding favouritism, there is always a fine line between bias & gut feel ...

Despite our bowling sucking badly in the WT20 no one is pointing fingers at Bharat Arun because we all acknowledge his contribution in establishing this bowling unit in tests and doing wonders for our fast bowling. This is not just as a coach but he has been working with likes of Siraj,Saini,Thakur etc at a A team level too. He has been picked personally by Shastri because  as a head coach he probably has the head part covered but he doesn’t know a thing about coaching or has any qualifications.

 

Our fielding has been poor and we are still scratching our heads why this Sridhar guy is still around and even picked over Jonty Rhodes.

 

Now coming to batting we scored our lowest score in England, our lowest ever score in Australia- 36 and 78. That was enough for someone to be held accountable. Not to

forget the collapses from match saving or winning positions.

 

You are right about Pant,Rohit,Rahul etc but that was freak performances and individual brilliance. I don’t see any coaching contributions there. 
 

On the flip side with bowling I can see a clear plan especially overseas. At home any spinner can turn the ball and wrap up the tourists. That’s why you don’t see bowlers running away with 5frs and 6frs overseas because we can see the bowling performs as a unit with a plan and the skill to execute the plan.

 

Rathour might not be as bad as we think he is but there isn’t anything significantly stellar under him either. Needs to

go.

 

i have never spent much time dissecting coaching performance. i don't know how to. i just credit them when they win a series and blame them when we lose. the test team has done very well. with regards to this WC, i am guessing all the staff, along with Shastri had already mentally checked out.

Yeah he was a limp-wristed weakling. Watching paint dry was way better than watching this fattu bat.

Good point! Just eliminate the batting coach position as most coaches are batsmen anyway.

Yes, he is a UK citizen, taking up citizenship a few years ago.

What would his self appraisal mention ? 

 

 

Successfully avoided lowest score of all time in tests.

 

Reused same batsmen across formats, thus reducing overall CTC for BCCI.

 

Victorious against legendary bowlers like Joe Root
