Some captains like to see/support players who may be limited on skills, but more than makes it up with their guile and efforts in the field.

Shardul and Ravi Jadeja fits very loosely to the above desciptions.

I am not sure how many Tests/white ball Shardul will play, but it is definitely  not fair to ask him to fill in for Players like Pandya etc and perform the same role or have the same impact

Hafeez has been good in T20 off late but I don't think he plays all 3 formats like a lot of India's cricketers.

 

Look at jaddu, he does well in last 2 tours of Aus tests, so they make him #7 against Anderson & co in Eng & then he's supposed to smash sixes and restrict runs in ipl/wt20. Same goes with our openers too, I'm not sure if too many teams play same pair in tests & T20.

I agree with you yes, we have totally different team for t20 and tests. Only Rizwan and Babar are three format batters for us. 

 

Haider Ali, Fakhar, Imad etc dont play test cricket

He always feels like a lucky, as opposed to good , bowler. Seems to take lots of wickets with ordinary balls. Of course his all round skills has given us spunk in tests. Not sure he is accurate or consistent enough for LOIs tbh,

But I think it is good to have format specific players, dont you think? 

 

Someone like jadeja can be effective in longer formats.

 

Also, for Hardik i think he is very good against spin but not against pace, in test matches you can take your time and relax down against pace, but you then take your chances when the spinners are on.

 

Shorter formats dont allow you to pick your bowlers to score off that well specially when you are batting in middle order.

Nearly 2 decades since T20 is played still our selectors can't differentiate in player's ability w.r.t format. Someone hits a few boundaries in tests gets in T20 team as a hitter.

Yes, it's a mistake on part of Indian selectors, or maybe they're just the yes men for some powerful forces, be it team captain, BCCI president or home ministers son. I wasn't justifying the behavior of so many all format players, just some root cause analysis.

 

It's the same thing with Pandya, if he's used efficiently he can do better provided he manages to stay fit.

Very useful in Tests especially in SENAW

 

Very High risk option in LOIs. If he improves batting can be considered. Hitting in Tests is different than hitting in T20s

I am not sure if Thakur will be picked even in tests

 

At best in swinging conditions as he is likely to lose more pace
