I remember when his career started he had this tag phrase 'boom or bust'. Either big scores or single digits. He has the potential. He reminds me of Carl Hooper who was immensely talented but always would play a soft shot and get out.

yeah, the carl hooper analogy is a good one. carl only became consistent toward the very end of his long career, before that he had an avg similar to KLR.

Kohli should pick Ashwin this time as there's no Jadeja to provide balance and Ashwin himself is batting well these days.

This should be the eleven

1. Kl Rahul
2. Shubman Gill
3. Pujara
4. Kohli
5. Vihari / Iyer
6. Pant
7. Shardul
8. Ashwin
9. Siraj
10. Shami
11. Bumrah

If it's a green mamba, will Kohli pick Vihari as the 5th bowler to bowl some spin (along with Mayank) and 4 pacers - Shardul, Bumrah, Shami and Siraj?

It wouldn't be a green mamba, SA simply doesn't have the batting we do. Among the Western nations they have IMO by far the worst batting, even lower than the pathetic lineup that Poms have fielded in the Ashes. If they do product anything close to Joberg 2018 matches will get over in 2-3 days :hysterical:

A green mamba is their best chance with the strong pace attack they have. Let's see what they produce

They have  better batting and bowling lineups than poms

Markram

Dekock

Rassie Van der dussen

Are world class batsman and their bowling lineup is far better.

Is de kock playing though?

I read a title somewhere few days ago,

" Who will be missed by which team more - Rohit or QDk?"

If its bouncy then our bowling is even more potent on such pitches. They should provide a pitch that offers movement off the pitch. Seaming track I mean. Mamba yes.

Dint they lose to poms 3 -1 at home with almost full strength team barring Duane Olivier and say stuurman? They do seem even stronger in bowling now. Batting is questionable but yes can be hit or miss on mamba type pitches.

He's wife is pregnant. He'll leave the series when the baby is due

Yes, this was the reason. Now I can recall. Think he will be leaving before the second test.

If the pitch is going to be conducive to bowlers all the sessions then you probably only need 3 bowlers some form 4th bowler. What if  a big what if we bowl during a session where the pitch is conducive for batting. That is where seamers need a break. Spinners can bowl a few tight long spells. One of the reason Ishant has had a long career despite being mediocre for the most of the career (until 2 or 3 years back) was because he had this ability to bowl longer spells. A workhorse. I don't know whether he will get chance again because of that.

If one out of the three seamers isn't doing well on a helpful pitch (and conditions) then we  will be in a problem, example - WTC Final.

I think 4 fast bowlers should be persisted with in SENA conditions with the possible exemption being a test at SCG(where we can play 2 spinners).

Also one out of the four pacers should be an allrounder like Shardul or Pandya.

Thakur is an excellent choice (assuming he can stay fit and have same energy levels). It works for us.  India's problem recent times have not been bowling. It is the batting.

Not the best choice nor the timing is right for KL personally.

Ashwin  should have been VC, but any chance they will play a all pace attack in at least one of the tests?

They did once when we had Pandya. 5 seamers no spinners. That was the only test we won. But will they trust Thakur that much? 4 below average tailender batsman/Thakur.   Pant is yet to be tested in SA. Not sure what to expect.  Then trimurthis. Atleast 2 will play. Iyer/Agarwal yet to be tested in these parts. KL Rahul himself is an inconsistent guy.  This could be another sub 100 all out scenario.

I honestly don't know what to expect from new TM, but even if they do the basics right it will be a massive improvement cos the previous TM struggled to even consistently play the obvious 8-9 players . It's understandable people will have disagreements on 2-3 players.

If we get a green mamba, go with a extra bat and if we get a pitch we think our batting can put 300 easily, get that extra bowler in, but yeah I would expect  1 or 2 sub 100 totals from this batting

there is no pitch these days where this batting can score 300 easily :((
