But if Root carries on like this for another 2-3 years (assuming Smith's rut continues) he may come close. Peak Smith is perfection, literally the greatest post WW-II (test) batsman to walk on this planet.....even this version of Root isn't fit to lace the boots of Smith of 2016-17.....or even better the monster from 2019 Ashes who was well on course to scoring 1000 runs in a series, after being out for a year from competitive cricket. Once checked Smith's H2H against other members of so called fab 4, except 1 series (Williamson in Aus, Taylor 290 wallah series) he has owned them all...like 9/10 times or something like that. Against Root makes for dismal reading, Kohli came closest to matching him in 2014-15 but ultimately fell short by almost 150 runs despite playing 1-2 extra innings. Vijy 1

That's it. I don't think he will ever become a no.1 batsman. Heck He won't even be no.1 batsman in India. Pant is officially our no.1 batsman.

Which tailender averages 35 in Australia? He has got numerous fifties in Australia, just that he hasn't been able to maximize the starts into big one. Also, far from a FTB. Those Sri Lankan or South African wickets he scored a lot of runs weren't flat tracks. If Root is a tailender in Australia, then Williamson is a tailender in basically every country except New Zealand and UAE. Stan AF and Vijy 2

Root may not have a hundred in Australia but he still have done okay there by consistently scoring fifties. He has done well against rest. As for the India series, everyone struggled in other matches. Those wickets were turners and most overseas players have failed on such wickets. By this logic Smith scored his runs on flat wickets in final two test in 2017 and the hundred he got on Pune was thanks to 5-6 missed chances from India. He failed in all the three inning apart from that on turners. Root imo is comfortably better than Kohli and Kane both as Root like Smith has won a test match in India. Root also has won test series in Sri Lanka and South Africa for his team too. At home, he has carried the burden of England batting on his own shoulders while in contrast at home conditions, the likes of Smith, Kohli and Kane have mostly lived a charm life. He has a terrific backfoot game especially through off side. He doesn't keep shortening the distance between him and bowler to find form like Kohli does.
