Majestic Posted October 9, 2022 Posted October 9, 2022 (edited) His ODI numbers are fantastic and he has really come into his own in terms of taking responsibility and showing maturity in his game. I believe he is a very effective anchor, crisis man with great ability to build his innings in ODIs. In the modern era of ODI cricket, you need a stable and consistent ODI batsman like him. Deserves a long term career in ODIs. Edited October 9, 2022 by Majestic
Lord Posted October 9, 2022 Posted October 9, 2022 Failed in SA and Aus. Did well in NZ but those were ultra pattas where despite his knocks, we lost 3-0 Great backup to have, but has to wait for his permanent spot Frustrated 1

Everyone comes up with weaknesses and if you can maintain an average of 45 at strike rate of 95+, then the player deserves the credit where its due. raki05 1

But good enough to make it into XI? Doubt it. We have lot of options

You play like 2 or 3 ODIs every 4 years in those parts lol We cannot shun a player based on that. Not like he scored series of single digits there. He got a start in almost every innings. Remember Rohit sharma "come to India". Ruturaj looked like an amazing pull shot player. On the front foot pulled a lot of players fors ixes. Looked totally out of depth against every type of bowling. raki05 1
ravishingravi Posted October 9, 2022 Posted October 9, 2022 I can't trust a cricketer with surname "Iyer". I have my reasons. And not because I am Iyengar. But yeh for me. He is an FTB. raki05, zen, Frustrated and 3 others 6

It's all relative. He's doing fine. But better than those in XI? They don't deserve to be shunned too.
zen Posted October 9, 2022 Posted October 9, 2022 Let's see! I call him "Dire S Iyer" but willing to keep an open mind if he improves his game against bouncers. In Ind, its top cricketers usually do well.

We have lot of options You can easily drop Dhawan who has been in dire form of late in ODIs striking at almost 80 odd strike rate and open with Pant. Yes , Gill is an option but he is yet to fix his temperamental issues as he plays too many shots from the start driving on the up and good bowling attacks will not let you do it as easily. In ODIs, his runs have come only vs Windies and Zimbabwe as of now. Edited October 9, 2022 by Majestic

He has enough experience to pull off slow 50s. He will have an embarrassing finish to his career if he persists. HE should quit while he is not so far behind. It doesn't make sense persisting with a 36 year old guy who is not the same anymore.

Gill has played only 11 games, 4 50+ scores. I'd take that. Not his fault he hasn't got more opportunity.

We cannot shun players based on criterias. Even now i have faith in Ruturaj. But mentally he looked not upto the task. In my cricket watching experience mentally strong players are more likely to succeed than technically sound, mentally weak players. DK vs Dhoni is a great example. DK had all the shots in the book when he made debut. No real weakness. He could bat anywhere in the line up. Dhoni with an average technique made a name for himself. Similarly nobody thought Pant would be such a fantastic test player but a poor T20 player. The way he played tests with high risk shots against spinners he was always one brainfart away. If someone is not good give them time to work on it. If they can come back better reconsider. It is in the hands of players.

We haven't tried him much there. We have typecasted him as an opener. Even in under-19 world cup he was not the opener. It was Manjot Kalra and Prithvi shaw.

Even SKY will do well if given chances in India. It's Dhawan's spot that's up for grabs.

He was always thought to be next Kohli, Tendulkar. India should try to extract the best out of him in one way or the other. Up the order series of soft dismissals make him very inconsistent. Just a few matches they can try by asking Pant or someone else to open.

That's not bad by any means or 'series of soft dismissals' Both him and Shaw will have long career after 2023.
