Is it safe to say Dhawan won't be coming back to Indian team now?

Gill was given opportunities when Dhawan was stand in by captain and he became the reason for Dhawan's departure. Ironic!

He was not given opportunity . He played 2 games in 2019 and 1 game in 2020. He deserved a place in ODI post AUS tour of 2020.  Nahi to baat kabka khatam hota.

Thats the problem with Indian Set up. Other guy has to fail so badly for years in order for someone else to get chance. Even that guy is 10 times better.  Majority fans have been saying it for years. At end, management realize it after 3-4 years.

If old horses are not winning any trophies then it is time to change them.  Unfortunately BCCI ala brand are slow decision makers and Seniors become leechers sooner or later.  Sachin played couple of extra years also.  Gavaskar did also.  There is nothing new there and unfortunately starts become liability to o the team at expense of trophies.

Aren't you being a bit too harsh on Gavaskar here?  He had a bit of down year in the mid-80s, but averaged 60+ in the 85-86 and 86-87 seasons, scoring well in Aus, in India vs Aus and again vs Pakistan, including that brilliant last innings which brought India so close on a Bengaluru minefield where everyone else looked clueless.  And then he just dropped his bat and walked away.

As a commentator, OTOH, he is just going way past his sell-by date :(

Still not in safe zone. If Gill keeps overshadowing these two senior duds, they will somehow find a way to bring back their buddy in the XI. To make them look less bad.

Under this corrupt team management none of the promising youngsters is safe...Gill, Kuldeep, Siraj, Kishan etc.

Yes, he can always be niggled out and replaced with Dhawan.

Gavaskar's 83 WC performance was not up to the mark. Gavaskar as Test batsman was top notch through out the career. I was talking about ICC trophies.

Test 125 214 16 10122 236* 51.12     34 45 26 108 0
ODI 108 102 14 3092 103* 35.13 4966 62.26 1 27   22 0

His world cup innns were 19,4,0,9,23,2 in 1983. His record in 1987 reliceance cup was ok like 300 runs. Overall, in ICC trophoies Gavaskar was disappointment.
