ODI batting average - Top 10( Impact factor considered)

Majestic

Recommended Posts

Minimum sample - 3000 runs and strike rate as 80+.

Top 10 in terms of batting average along with their strike rate:-

1. Babar Azam - 59, 89

2. Virat Kohli - 57, 92

3. AB de Villiers - 53, 101

4. MS Dhoni - 50, 87

5. Joe Root - 50, 86

6. Hashim Amla - 49, 88

7. Rohit Sharma - 48, 89

8. Michael Hussey - 48, 87

9. Viv Richards - 47, 90

10. Ross Taylor - 47, 83

Other notable names from current era :-

Faf - 47, 87

Bairstow - 46, 104

Kane - 46, 80

de kock - 45, 96

Dhawan - 45, 91

S Smith - 45, 87

Warner - 44, 95

Miller - 41, 101

Guptill - 41, 87

Buttler - 40, 119

Roy - 39, 106

Note :- The likes of Michael Bevan, Shai Hope and a few more names from 70s and 80s would miss out due to low strike rate era.

Observations:-

1. The likes of Kohli and ABD are top two hands down in the last 15 years as far as ODI greatness is concerned. Babar is inching closer to them if he maintains this average for 5 more years and delivers more World Cup performances. Viv given the era he played is simply invincible and would probably be averaging close to 60 at S/R of 110 in current era.

2. Dhoni, Rohit, Amla and Taylor other prolific names in this format from present era. Of the four, Amla has nothing really to show in World Cups.

3. Apart from that, the other high strike rate impact batsman includes Jos Buttler, Johnny Bairstow, David Miller and Jason Roy, three of them from England's current team.

Even if I quickly do Avg * SR

ABDV  5353

Babar 5251

Kohli 5244

Some players I feel inspite of lesser strike rate has more impact.

Example - Ross Taylor ( SR 83)has arguably more impact in ODIs than Hashim Amla (SR 88).

Tendu the opener had an avg of 48 and SR close to 90 IIRC. he would have boosted it to 55 and 100 SR IMO in current era

Kohli has surprisingly been well below par in ODI World Cups. He was not among the top run scorers in any of the ODI World Cups.

2015- Sangakkara, Guptill, ABD, Taylor, Dhawan, S Smith

2019 - Rohit, Warner, Shakib, Kane, Root, Bairstow

not really a surprise - this fact has been known for a while. he is undoubtedly a king in WT20, but not so much in ODI WC

What's against teams are considered ? That's a crucial consideration not all teams are equal in odi bowling.

Yes he shows up only against Pakistan.  2015 was his best chance. 2011 he was playing sidekick role. 2019 also he had to play sidekick role given the Rohit's domination.

You have take playing conditions and equipment into consideration.Richards has to be at the top ,how many had such high sr back then, though the bowlers may have been less accustomed to one day bowling and fielding might not have been that great either.

The data in OP should help us decide the best players of a particular era and then we can put them era wise and come to the top 10 conclusion of ODI batters of all-time.

Barring one or two players, most players stats will decrease by a bit when considering against top teams.  Babar is not in your list because he doesn't have that many runs so he falls short of eligibility criteria at the moment.

Problem is that it excludes exceptional performers from each era. Like Viv was like Abd of 80s. His strike rate was unparalleled among contemporaries. But these stats make him look worse than Bairstow, DeCock, Dhawan etc.
