Remember, Vettori has 4500 test runs with 6 test hundreds. Among bowlers with 200+ wickets, Vettori is only behind Kallis, Sobers, Dev, Botham in runs tally.

Also, Jadeja's test bowling stats have been pretty mediocre when he has to play as sole spinner.

any stats on that?

I remember him doing well in Melbourne 2018,Oval 2018 when Ash wasnt there. Dunno the overall numbers..

Bowling average - 40

Batting average - 32

But all these matches are outside India.

that's not too bad. Vettori himself averages 37 (bowling) in those countries.29 with bat.

Actually surprising he's not played in India without Ashwin. Maybe Ashwin just hasn't missed home games.

I am not sure if Jadeja can be competitive if not for those turning Indian pitches.

His OS bowling record is relatively abysmal.

jadeja is much better than vettori as a test cricketer. better bat, better fielder, and slightly better bowler (even after removing turners).

Vettori is better captain and leader.

I don't assign as high weights to these as I do to the fundamental cricketing skills that all cricketers must have. there is only 1 captain, whereas there are (usually) 7 batting options and 5 bowling options and 11 fielding options.

ultimately, it's all a matter of assigning weights. so, there is no way of proving X is greater than Y. to give an example, consider the following:

Pataudi or vettori overall?

Pataudi - better captain & leader & batter

vettori - better bowler and fielder

so, answering this boils down to determining what weights one will assign.

While terming Jadeja better spinner than Vettori one must take into account subcontinent pitches that Jadeja thrived in along with an equally destructive spin bowler Ashwin to partner.  Also vettori wasn't really an allrounder but punched above his weight in batting in tests.

vettori didn't do well in the matches he played in india (and perhaps other parts of SC). moreover, if I recall correctly, he feasted quite a bit on likes of bang (who were very weak then) and zim; more so than Jaddu.

vettori was definitely a true AR in tests after the first 30-35% of his test career.

Yes he was true AR in tests. In tests, he exceeded expectations in batting compared to his ability.

IIRC, he maintained a test avg of about 40 at no. 7. but the good thing about jaddu is that he kept moving up the order and was still able to handle it. kinda like ravi "bewda" shastri, who started at 10 or 11 and became a gritty opener by the end

Jaddu always had batting ability. He just wasn't suitable for LOIs.
