at his best, he was very good. but his peak didn't last long though.

1300 runs is not really a worthy sample. He was good for 1-2 years though ('16 & '17) but that's not enough.

To be fair, he had a SR above 100 after his first 50 games, but then he "matured" and became more "solid" and decided that he needs to "consolidate" the innings and "stay till the end" as that was part of the divine "process".

That would be case with ODIs in every 5 years span. 1980s cricketers would have felt that runs have become cheap in 90s and so on.

It wouldn't be untrue. 

Though i personally feel for quite a long time the odi game didn't really change that much. For like 15-20 years or so, a score of 250 while batting first was considered daunting until mid to late 2000s. Then 2 new balls has also made run scoring easier and taken spinners out of the game for much of the innings. The ball got softer after the 15 overs fielding restriction which made run scoring at a high rate difficult in that period.
