Lyon, the best spinner of his generation!

Respect for Lyon for being a spinner that tends to take the conditions out of the equation relatively more.

In the ongoing Ashes, even on the first day of the Birmingham test, he picked up 4 wkts and now has added 3 more to his kitty already.

(Contrast that with Indian spinners who have made a career out of bowling on tailored pitches to batsmen who only play 3-5 tests in such conditions in 3-5 years)

In SENA since 2010:

So, the GOAT off-spinner has a less-than-mediocre record on manufactured Asian (esp Indian) dustbowl pitches tailor-made for off-spin. Wonder why. It must be that the spicy food doesn't agree with him or some such excuse?

not enough of a challenge maybe (and that's a tongue-in-cheek remark)

That too against one of the worst spin players ever to playing for India.  He couldnt do zilch when Stokes added 60 odd runs with Jack leach no.11 batsman  to win the test.

If Lyon bowled to his own team, where batsmen hardly play much on such pitches, in India, he would likely out-perform the Indian spinners, who have also "tailored" their game for such to become more or less useless in anything relatively more challenging.

I think Lyon and Ashwin are on par in overseas conditions.

But Ashwin's track record in Asian conditions turns it in his favour, not just that but that big a difference in average always means something.

Lyon has failed to make an impact In SriLanka, UAE and Pakistan as well so it's not just about performances in India.

But yeah I can see how this won't matter for white supremacists(or their bootlickers) who care only about cricket in SENA.

He is good, close to 500 wickets for an Australian off spinner is no small feat. No need to diss him.

He is the lone spinner with guaranteed spot in every single match home or away.  He is going to bowl a lot of overs. He is going to stack up wickets obviously. If he were to play for INdia with jadeja in the side he would not have played that many tests to start with given his woeful batting.

Lyon is having a great time because his nemesis is out from cricket since the start of the year and will most likely be back next year only.

An Australian great but not ATG. Neither are Ashwin or Jadeja ATG as well.

at least 6-7 Aus spinners better than him, but he is still a fine bowler: O'Reilly, Grimmett, Benaud, Warne, McGill, Mallett, Ironmonger

I know the first 4.

McGill is an underachiever. I would say Lyon has surpassed him. No idea about the other two as I haven't read about them.

Mallett was best spinner outside Ind spin trio (Bedi, Pras, Chandra) in that era, and arguably as good as bedi and pras.

Ironmonger made his debut very late. one of the early mystery spinners who was quite deadly.

McGill was underachiever, but was a much more dangerous bowler than Lyon

Just like Lyon is rated highly by some posters here inspite of 32 average because he took 500 wickets, I wonder what is the reason they despise Kapil for his 29 average after 434 wickets?
