Damn. Our draw with the Chinese today has put the Men's chess team in 2nd place. Iran comes from third to take first.

Is it the final result ?  I don't think we have played Vietnam or have we ? I think if we beat them we could take 1st place.

3 more rounds. Iran doesn't face anyone that can dethrone them though. India/China/Iran and Uzbekistan have all faced each other already

We have not played Vietnam. We have underperformed in Chess.

We were the top seeds.

That Iranian guy - Maghsoodloo Parham - has been on fire.  We not only beat Vietnam's Le Quang Liam - he also beat Gukesh.

We should beat Vietnam..

Iran as a team beat both Uzbekistan and China whereas we drew with them.

Yeah...that  Maghsoodloo Parham from Iran - he was the cutting edge. I expected more from Gukesh and Pragg.

We may finish on 26-29 golds which will be ~ 7-12 golds behind Korea and Japan. This despite not having any gold from gold heavy events like Swimming, Diving, Gymnastics, Cycling, Fencing, Rowing, Canoeing where they win many golds consistently.

Amazing performance from the Indian team.

Whether it is 24 golds or 25, 99 overall or 100, it doesn't take away anything from the fact that it has been an amazing campaign (also covered very well on ICF).

korea japan will be soon overtaken in 15 years time. they are already first world and won't grow anymore plus they are aging and population is declining hence lesser pool.

our economy is still growing plus population also increasing.

china is tougher cause while their population has plateaued they are still growing (although they are slower than us). also they have same number of people as us and we don't have the population advantage we do against japan/korea.

i only see us overtaking china around 2060 when we will be a 0.82-0.83 hdi country and china will be a 0.92-0.93 country. we will also have 200-300 million more people who will be younger.

we need to invest in other  sports ,many events the chinese have no competition at all.

those events will come automatically as india grows richer.

even the chinese started with "cheaper" sports like shooting and weightlifting. now they are richer they are going into rowing, swimming, sailing, canoeing etc.

Tomorrow potential medals

Compound Archery Mixed team should medal tomorrow. Hopefully gold given the form of Vennam and Ojas. Ojas was perfect in 2 matches to reach to final in the individuals.

Recurve Mixed team is also in the QFs.. but we have been disappointed enough by them to know they are not a sure thing.

Squash (Hopefully we don't win any of these as that would mean they get to the finals)

Mens semifinals

Mixed team semifinals x 2

Athletics

Mens Javelin - potential for 1-2 with Neeraj and Jena

Womens 800m - Bains & Harmilan could win silver/bronze

35 km mixed team walk - there are only 5 teams - so India could win a surprise medal here

Mens 5000m - Avinash Sable could medal here hopefully. Is in great form

4x400m Womens - unlikely medal - maybe bronze

4x400m Mens - Not winning gold will be disappointing

Boxing

Parveen Hooda in the semifinals. Hope she wins to get final.. but likely bronze

Bridge

Mens team - Gold/Silver

Wrestling (Greco-Roman)

Hopefully a couple here - although not our strong suite. Haven't won a medal in a while

Not bad - my predictions for today were pretty good. Was wrong about the women's team - they were awesome even without Hima Das

Forgot about Lovlina's medal.

We need to get better to make our current guys sure shots at winning and make them all world class all the time. Can expand after that IMO. Athletics is the best investment IMO. Track & Field can be done anywhere in India. Not as much fancy equipment required. In fact if we open high performance centers in Uttarakhand/Ladakh/Western Ghats and train track athletes there we have a good environment + high altitude training for track events. Weightlifting should also be a focus area. NE people seem to have a proclivity for it. Need to invest in scouting the NE states for athletes in weightlifting esp.

Feels like we are hardly going to get any medals after the last few days.

Tomorrow potential medals

Archery: Optimistic here but feel that the two team events in Compound archery are golds for us. Men & Women. Gold x 2

Squash: Mixed - Silver, Singles - Gold

Wrestling:

Womens Freestyle 53kg - Antim Panghal - Silver/Bronze (She was silver medalist in the recent Asian Championships, Bronze medalist in this year's world championships and gold medalist in the U20 championships). Bronze should be a given but would be good to win Silver. Japanese lady in this category is a certain winner

Womens Freestyle 57kg - Mansi Ahlawat - Bronze (Already has a bye to the QF. Comes off some big wins in the U23 world championships where she won bronze. Also coming to a lower weight category from a higher one. Should be an advantage). Beat Anshu Malik and Sarita Mor for the qualification to the Games.

6 medals in total. Predicted tally 3G - 1S - 2B

TIER 1 - sports  we are already world class in (best in the world - wins gold at highest levels)

compound archery

TIER 2 - sports we are good in but not yet world class (wins a medal or two in olympics/world championships)

boxing

wrestling

badminton

shooting

athletics

hockey

weightlifting

TIER 3 - sports we are ok in (not yet world championship/olympic level but qualifies till quarter finals)

recurve archery

table tennis

TIER 4 - sports we are bad at (group stage exit in world championship/olympic)

swimming

cycling

rowing

etc etc

First priority should be to get TIER 2 to 1, then 3 to 2, then new sports in 4 to 3.  15 years down the line again move a tier up.

Shooting is actually tier 1. Look at the world rankings on the ISSF site. We have Indians in the top 5 in every category. This goes back 10 yrs. Pedigree at Olympics is bad. Otherwise at World Championships we do great. However, given the number of medals we can win we are a mix of 1 and 2.

Boxing is Tier 3 atm. Weightlifting is Tier 4. Athletics is also Tier 3 - although we have a couple of events we can be great at. 4x400m mens, Javelin Mens are the only ones where we can say we are truly world class. TT is also Tier 4

Olympics is several notches above Asian Games or Commonwealth Games.

Many many countries much below in the tally than us in Asian Games or Commonwealth end always end up winning many more medals than us in Olympics.

If we can cross double digits in next Olympics ( which we have never done in our history ) - it would be a bigger achievement than 100 medals here at the Asian Games.

We need to be near unbeatable in 3-4 target  sports at Olympics level.

shooting is tier 1 true but keeping it in 2 till olympics performance is good.

athletics i'd say is tier 2 (tier 2 is not world class but good). we do make olympics/world championship finals and have top 10 finishes a lot. in junior championships also we have started winning medals.

boxing especially women's boxing is tier 2. we win world championship medals and olympic medals too. tier 2 is basically a bronze or two in olympics.

tt is tier 3. tier 3 is qualifies for world championships/olympics but loses a few rounds in.

tier 4 is complete zero, just starting out. lose in first round itself (if a candidate even qualifies for the event in the first place).

yes, cause the games they are good at they are world class in.

while we are decent at many, but not world class in many. the only sport where we are truly world class is compound archery (which is not an olympic sport).
