India v Essex 2002

Bangar was also a bowler and that probably clinched his place. Surprised to see Bopara in the Essex bowlers' list! Didn't know his career went that far back!

Plenty of competition. Bangar did responded well as he blunted the new bowl superbly alongwith Dravid which allowed SRT and Ganguly to hit hundreds as well. Ofcourse, Dravid went on to hit hundred and it was the best knock of the game.

Something similar happened during 2004/05 Australia tour.

Sadagopan Ramesh made 87, 36, 21, 37 not out

Akash Chopra made 2, 55*,  0, 11

Even though Ramesh himself was an opener they never bothered to try him. They were dead set on using Chopra as opener there.

SS Das went on to score 349 runs in 5 innings, scoring 250 and another 50 at avg of 70.

The match in which he scored 250, Ganguly was 2nd highest scorer with 74.

Just before this tour, he had good FC year scoring 700 runs in 9 matches at avg of 50.

India v WI A

SS Das - 29 and 0 runs

Bangar - 0 and 27 runs/0 and 1wickets

Jaffer - 5 and 52 runs

India v Hampshire

Jaffer - 13 and 32 runs

Bangar - 4 and 52 runs/4 and 3 wickets

Das didn't play

1st test

Jaffer - 1 and 53 runs

India v Worcestershire

Jaffer - 43 runs

Bangar - 0 runs

2nd test

Jaffer - 0 and 5 runs

India v Essex

SS Das - 250

Bangar - 21 and 74 (as opener)/1 wicket

Jaffer - 19 and 4 runs (middle order)

3rd test

Bangar -68 runs/2 wickets

India v Derbyshire

Bangar - 17 and 7 runs

Das - 18 and 52 runs

Jaffer - 49 and 14* runs

4th test

Not saying that wrong decisions were made, but just wonder what was the thought process behind selections in the series.

Das was a similar sort of player to Bangar as well as Akash Chopra. Not much by way of strokeplay but can occupy the crease.

Ramesh had failed spectacularly from the previous tour of Australia and was even struggling against Zimbabwe.

Scoring against a weak Victoria attack was probably not good enough to get him in the team.

Previous tour? Nobody actually did well . Rahul Dravid averaged 15 in that series.  3 spicy pitches against Australia and their umpires. 2004/05 absolute roads. No Mcgrath. No Warne.  Dravid scored less than what he scored in 3 tests. Even Against Pakistan such a gun bowling attack he was the highest run getter.

I know you dislike Dravid but there's no serious comparison between Ramesh and Dravid as Test batsmen.

Dravid had bought himself a much longer rope with very good performances in England , NZ, SA and Windies and one failure in Australia 99 was not going to be held against him .

Even when set, Ramesh had this habit of throwing his wicket away  and was struggling against  Heath Streak and Paul Strang even on Indian pitches.

Excellent piece of work by WICB...  Bishop & Ambrose explaining that iconic final day of that infamous Barbados test in 97...  Bishop explains how he & lara planned Sachin's dismissals.  One if the most horrifying loss in ICT history.

I am pretty sure he would not have been part of the squad if they thought along those lines. He was competing with Akash chopra not Sachin Tendulkar. Heck even 18 year old Parthiv patel was thrashing Brett Lee for fun in that series. Ramesh was definitely better than CHopra who couldn't even do well against those poor teams.

IN the earlier year in a tour game Ramesh and Chopra opened. Ramesh made 110. He was clearly part of the plans for India. It is inexplicable why a much better talented Ramesh was ignored over this guy. Also he was a left hander.  Not only that. He was removed from the squad next tour. Bizarre end to hsi career.

By the way i dislike Dravid as a coach. Not as a batsman.

Perhaps he did deserve a go ahead of Chopra but that guy Ramesh was quite mediocre himself .  At least at the highest level. Lazy wafts and outside off stump and lazy footwork and just did not have the focus for batting long .

Very elegant player but a very soft cricketer. Or at least that's what I remember.

My abiding memory of him will be his dismissal by Razzaq in 99 WC.

He was beaten for pace on an absolute straight ball and he couldn't believe what had happened.  Feet barely moved.

Fastest spell i have seen against India was AKhtar vs India in 1999 series. He was the highest run getter.  Even in 1999 world cup when he was the stop gap opener after Sachin left, he played well against zimbabwe which we lost.. Heath streak was part of it. He ripped the heart out of India.

SS Das scored 250 in the first inning, yet didn't get chance in the series.

Sanjay Bangar played ahead of him.

He was  crap.  Worse than Akash Chopra level crap.  Orissa SMG just because he was short.    90s and early 2000s, test opening slot was a revolving door of stinking mediocrity from Debang Gandhi to SS Das and others.

Gambhir and Sehwag luckily saved us in 2000s. India tried Laxman , Yuvraj sing, Deep das Gupta.

das was better than d. gandhi, somasundar, and many others. about the same level as chopra, perhaps arguably better slightly
