There was no debate on No.4 and 5. We had decided 18 months ago only who were the contenders for that spot - Rahul Dravid

Interesting thoughts by Dravid.

"The contenders for no 4 and 5 were between Shreyas, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant. But unfortunately all three got injured at the wrong time in a span of 2 months. So, we had to experiment."- Rahul Dravid

That clears any doubt that in World Cup, who will be our no 4 and 5.

So why not prepare backups?

Though have to say Rahul's tenure has been unlucky with too many injuries

They prepared by experimenting other options such as SKY, Samson, Kishan and Tilak.

It seems they will only be in consideration if Iyer or KL were unavailable for WC. Otherwise these two will be fully backed because the other contender Pant isn't there.

and that's okay. KL and Shreyas have done fine enough. Problem is if one or both miss out, the replacement should bat at same spot and not rejig entire order.

Kishan can only open and SKY seems best for 6-7 only.

Dravid as captain replaced Sachin with Uthappa as opener.

That was not enough for him.

Now as coach Dravid  18 months ago equated this "KL" and this "Iyer" with Pant? You mean he was ready to pick KL and Iyer and leave out Pant?

How did you get 'he was ready to leave out Pant?

He never said that. He said in his interview that those were the three contenders for those two spots and it was unfortunate that all three got injured in a span of 2 months and they were not even small injuries but really major injuries. Link is shared, you can view that, not sure if it's working though.

Ind has not been able to find replacement for no.4,5,6 since Yuvraaj, Dhoni adnd Raina.

This should have been concerning just show how hollow the so called depth and bench strength and foresightedness was .

They are playing cricket of 10-15 years ago.

Sanju samson should have been part of this. He averages 86 in these positions.  Instead they are trying SKY who is trying to learn how to play ODI. Iyer, KL Rahul, Samson are the best options.

It does seem that there is something that is worrying them w.r.t Sanju Samson. The guy averages 55 in ODIs now and even recently he got a fifty in ODIs, his failures were in T20s. But they have just put him as reserves and considering Kishan and SKy both ahead of him.

Fair enough but if we take into count since Jan 2022, I think Iyer has missed only Australia ODI series in March this year.

Both KL and Iyer were there in most of the series and results were still not good. Whitewash in SA, BD (almost) and NZ reflect quite poorly that we were missing solid middle order batting even in their presence. The only away series we won in England was due to Pant.

Was wondering the same.

Pant was part of ODI squad in BD series but was sent home just a day or two before it got started. He was never given a permanent spot in the X1 despite playing a leading role in winning an ODI series vs world champions England. Dravid had set his mind on using KL as makeshift opener and keeping Pant out. Everyone with some sense knows that between the two, Pant can be counted upon to pull the team out of a right spot whereas KL will crumble under the pressure 9 times out of 10. But Dravid and Rohit seem to think that he will somehow become mentally strong and turn into a match winner some day.
