It does create pressure and allows the opposition (at center) to create perception that the party is failing. Congress is just terrible to seize thew opportunity.

BJP won state elections in many states before 2014 IIRC.

Now imagine if some terrible govt like Congress is unopposed for 5 years, it'll only mean disaster.

It's perception but I don't see any results. BJP won all the state elections before 2004 and we're overwhelming favourites. They in fact preponed the elections and lost. So I don't see any evidence of state elections influencing central elections or vice versa because they are fought on different issues.

It seems like usual bureaucratic resistance to change.

this is so bad for so many reasons.India is a union of states.each state has their own problems.this hare brain scheme will completely make the states problems secondary to the national problems.India is not a homogeneous country and this idea will not work.

Today I learnt about this terrible idea. This was in place till 1971. However, because Congress dismissed many of state governments, it effected the timing of these elections.

So another Congress legacy.

Its in the BJP manifesto.I still dont see how they will implement this even if they get 2/3 majority.no regional party will accept this even bJP allies.BJP better off fighting the delimitation battle because that has to be implemented no matter what.

Delimitation will mean severe division of North South.

One nation-one election willreduce the burden on the exchequer by a tonne - but I agree that it would be more prudent to follow through on UCC and undoing things like the WAQF act.

Not if done right.the present disparity in representation is untenable.the number of seats are going to go way up and if BJP doesn't want to lose its southern gains then they are better off just increasing the seats withstarter. the present percentage of each state.doing delimitation based on population is a non starter.

The whole idea of delimitation was that it should be done based on population. Which is why this can has been pushed down the road by every successive govt and nothing will change here.

They have to do it.BJP brought in the womens reservation bill and you need to do the census and delimitation  to make it work.

Nope both can be done independently.

how? even the government has explicitly said they are delaying it till 2026 is because they havent done the Census and delimitation has to be done based on that.If you think the seats will remain at 543 and magically 33% of that will be reserved for women then you are wrong.without increasing the number of seats even womens reservation will be tough.

The number of seats will increase.

That was one of the big reasons for new parliament building. The old building was an obstacle and an convenient excuse

First order of business for the new government should be completion of 2021 Census which is delayed die to Covid, CAA, NRC and what not. It will definitely tell why some states like TN have  an disproportionate number of lok sabha seats allocated to them based on population that was there some 75 years ago.
