To curb illegal immigration (3.2 mil) last year 1000$ fee on tourists from India.

When you look closer the personal tragedies come to fore. India needs to do better to at state and federal levels and curb this practice.

"Six months after Bharat Rabari left Gujarat on his journey to the United States via the Caribbean, his wife Chetna Rabari on Wednesday approached local police in Prantij with a complaint — that her husband has been missing since February 4. She accused two agents, Mahendra Patel and his aide Johny Patel alias Divyesh, of sending people to the U.S. via various illegal routes and claimed that her husband was the latest victim of their work."

"Scores of middle-class families in Gujarat from Patel-dominated villages in the districts of Mehsana, Gandhinagar, Kheda, Anand and Amreli regularly migrate to the U.S., many illegally, because it is considered a status symbol.

"Police wearing berets and bulletproof vests broke down the door of a Guatemala City apartment in February hunting for illegal drugs. Instead, they found a different kind of illicit shipment: 27 immigrants from India packed into two locked rooms.

Meanwhile, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Honduras still don't require visas for Indians, meaning smugglers can shift routes and use those countries as alternate jumping-off points for the journey north."

Claim persecution

Indians caught by U.S. authorities often claim they fled their homeland because of religious persecution. Then they wait for months in federal detention centers like Port Isabel, in the town of Los Fresnos, about an hour's drive from the Texas-Mexico border.

On a recent morning at Port Isabel, young Indian men wearing navy blue detention uniforms filled the benches in Immigration Judge Keith Hunsucker's courtroom. Sixteen of the 32 cases on the docket were Indian immigrants, including Salimbhai Mansiya, from the state of Gujarat, who had been detained more than a month earlier.

More context

https://www.dw.com/en/india-why-are-undocumented-gujaratis-migrating-to-the-us/a-65259174

"Families from Gujarat state are risking their lives to make the perilous journey through the Mexican desert or Canada's dense forests in freezing temperatures in search of the so-called American dream."

What's driving Gujaratis to migrate?

"Thousands from Gujarat's Patidar or Patel community have tried to undertake precarious journeys through dense forests, deserts and risky water channels to reach the US in search of better lives and the "American dream."

"The rush to escape is strong. People here are willing to spend any amount of money to somehow reach the US where the large and powerful network of the Patel community takes care of them," sociologist Gaurang Jani, who teaches at the Gujarat University in Ahmedabad, told DW.

"Once they have reached their destination, there is a huge support structure from the community. They do not mind taking on menial jobs but the goal is to reach the US," added Jani.

Ki gal aye? Shan’t ho ja  puttar Khoteya. !! Punjab, Gujarat are the main centers for immigration to US/UK/Kaneda .  This is a troll topic and I am obliging.

This is not a troll topic. This is serious business. Do you ever notice how hard an average Indian works in Delhi. He still has nothing to show for as the elites are taking advantage. This has nothing to do with politics either. Poverty is a real problem.

Yeah, let’s cherry pick news articles. Most chain immigration from India happens from Punjab , Gujarat etc. Most gas station attendants here are Punjabis. Gujjus come through chain immigration.

Not true. The one who died at your border were from Gujrat. But lot of Punjabis are illegals too.

It would be better if we all behave like adults and discuss the problem rather than bringing our biases in.

Problem is the grass-is-greener syndrome. People who live abroad may have crappy lives in crappy jobs - but still feel they will be top dog just because they are abroad.

The same ppl could live much better lives in India with a fraction of the money they spend trying to smuggle themselves there. By the time they get to the US, they realise they have been trapped. The network of slavery is insanely entrenched in the US, where people turn over their lives for a life of servitude to motel and gas station owners. A lot of my friends who used to work at gas stations and motels for extra income during my college days have seen this firsthand. They don't realise that those who earn abroad also have to spend proportionally abroad and that the lifestyle you can actually afford or the jobs you get will not be the kind of lifestyle people see in Karan Johar movies.

I have seen people who come from well-to-do families in India—who live in palatial homes—live in shoe boxes in the US, living a terrible lifestyle—happy to be there just for the sake of being abroad.

Regardless, people are free to make their own mistakes. It is sad that there is 0 knowledge that goes into throwing their lives away though.

On topics like these, hard to speak without %. What % of middle class applies for going abroad ? What % actually goes abroad ?

What is illegal immigrants as a % of population ? Which states are they from ? I would say mainly Punjab, Haryana and to some extent Gujarat but would like to see some numbers.
