If India manages to defeat each team comprehensively before KOs , then what's the point of SF and final?

India managed to defeat teams comfortably in bilaterals.

What's the point of even having a World Cup ?

Well in WCs you get to play against full strength teams. Top teams mostly play B teams in bilaterals these days.

Relying on Iyer to score runs is like relying on manish pandey to score runs.

It's all down to the old men: Ro & Ko

He is alright for consolidating and putting up a decent total in case we lose early wickets batting first. Batting second, I don't feel as confident. Gill is long overdue for a match winning performance. Some say his poor form is after effect of dengue but I am not convinced. He looked fine against Lanka. Hope he can do something special in the remaining games. He is very much capable - murdered the Kiwi bowling to score a double hundred not long ago. As for Surya, the best we can hope for is a 70(30) type blitz to put us ahead in the game. Consolidation, innings building, acceleration sequence is not for him.

Many people not understanding the reason here. In format, Indian team had already played against all the teams in league itself which has not been the case in previous world cups where you have two groups and all teams don't play each other and only get to play in the knockouts.

So by this logic, Australia should have been handed the WC several times before playing the semi and finals? It's a tournament, you go through the process to become champs.

Did Australia play all the teams and defeat them in those occasions during league phase?

In all WCs, the League phase is there only for qualifying purpose. There is no reward for being the best team in this phase. Even the points and NRR achieved by a team dont get carry forwarded.   It will remain that way.

Exactly the point.

India has already proven that they are better team than NZ and Aus in WC.

It is stupid to play semifinals in exactly like in group format.

They did carry points forward in super sixes format. One of semi finals was based on those points only in 2003. Kenya would have never played in semis otherwise.

There should be reward for being best team otherwise all these 45 matches are meaningless.

Which WC had Aus defeating all other teams before semi final? Please read the logic given first.

No offense dude but your logic is bonkers! Knockout games come with extra pressure ... And as we all know our players have a mental block when it comes to knockout for a while now. Just cause you won all the games before the knockouts means nothing. No one will go back and be like ohh India won all their pre Knockout games, best team in WC lmao

Did NZ lose WC 2019 final because they were mentally inferior to Eng on the day?

The top two to play the final, the top team gets to choose to bat or bowl first, get rid of the semis, this way no one can just sneak into the final.

Coz it’s a knockout tournament.
It’s like an exam. The mock tests don’t matter besides preparing you for the main event. Your performance in the main exam is what matters in the end.

Or a better analogy would be an exam or anything that involves multiple levels. The last level of a World Cup is a knock out. The only purpose of the earlier levels is to make you reach that last level.

If you don’t want this, then don’t call it a World Cup as world cups are always knockouts eventually.

It has round robin format so not a knockout tournament. Football wc and tennis grand slams are knockout tournaments. In those, you don't get to play against all the opponents and is out of tournament after losing the game.
