You cannot alienate SL...  Simply cannot. It would be geopolitical disaster. 

India has pumped in billions already. 

Compared to Bangladesh Nepal it is a Pro India population.  Ofc these countries are always threatened about India taking them over or taking their sovereignty for granted. 

 

In this case SLC is one of the closest allies of BCCI...  Remember when WI skipped a tour midway in 2014 & SL agreed to tour in contingency for 5 ODIs.  BCCI since then has forged close ties...  Reason why Chota Shah was adamant to give them hosting rights for Asia Cup.  PCB canceled ODI series and in SL over that & played only tests. 

You cannot gift SL to China & expect India would feel safer ever.

after their economy collapsed and only India extended them 2B dollars of credit line - at a time no one was willing to help - a few weeks after that - they allowed a massive Chinese spy ship to dock there - this is despite the fact that India has repeatedly requested them not to allow dual purpose Chinese ships to doc there to collect sonar signatures of Indian submarines. 
 

No matter how many times India has told lanka to be extra sensitive about our national security interest, they always bow down before China while taking unconditional benefits from us. China is 1000s of miles away, not a neighbor and has 0 civilization bonds. 
 

Let them suffer badly for a while under china - as it is they are bowing down to Chinese demands for everything - once they are on an ICU, India should just absorb them to the union of India like we did with Sikkim.

they have already lost Hambantota to China on a 99 year old lease. Which is as good as gone. Plus nobody knows the other pressures China has applied on them because everything is opaque with Chinese engagements.  Inspite of all these Chinese “powerhouse “ investments - lanka got bankrupt and indebted beyond cure. This is how China “ aided “ them.  Need not say more.

From an economic perspective SL has already defaulted on its debts. So india china dont matter.. they ll take the line of credit from either and then during interest payment time they ll cry default and the fixed income specialists will restructure the debt ( 40 pence to a dollar ie write off 60 %) and then there will be some economic tightening in public services ( no salary hike for civil servants, extra Vat etc) and then  all back to square zero.. seen it many times.. a mere China spyship in indian ocean is not a big deal as china has strengthened maritime reconnaissance in that region and diego garcia for last 10 years.. basically the whole government clan is corrupt and thats the reason why people got so angry a year ago and started burning down govt buildings and rajapaksha clan had to flee..

Absorbing another state does or depend HDI and other random metrics but many regional and geopolitical and geoeconomic factors. For all their better HDI - they are going to be in an economic mess for a long long time  It’s not as if lanka is a first world country. They are pretty much third world.

In case of SL it does...  People over there are not illiterate but quite self aware.  They do have highest literacy rate in South Asia.   And society hasn't fallen apart & there are several consequences of a forceful occupation...  (Not that I believe India can pull it off yet)  It would take years of convincing to the world & locals of a peaceful integration. 

It's a futile exercise anyway when you can reap benefits in short term by extending more influence there.

As India reaches 10 trillion dollar Economy mark South Asia will pretty much accept Indian dominance anyway...  And by that time we would have at least Chinese level MIC to be more aggressive & bold in our actions.

Where have I ever indicated forcefully occupying Lanka ? 
 

I said we should absorb them into the union of India when they are in ICU and there is civil chaos due to an economic collapse induced by bad policies and mismanagement.  They are not going to come out of their economic mess anytime soon . And nobody knows how worse their situation is going to get given how opaque Chinese loan terms and conditions are . 
 

when geopolitical factors force the hand - it will eventually happen organically. Does not matter what the differential in HDI is or whether Indias gdp is  7 trillion or 10 trillion. 
 

it should happen organically and via a referendum in lanka.
