Lanka couldn't chase 212 and got bundled out for 123 against them. NZ couldn't chase 208 and got bundled out for 112 against them. https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/icc-world-cup-2002-03-61124/match-schedule-fixtures-and-results Imagine thinking a bowling lineup of lee and McGrath is weak. All the more reason to bat first against them as chasing against that beastly bowling lineup was a huge ask. Our best bet was to bat first and put a score on the board as anything over 240-250, we weren't chasing against them, especially in a WC final where the pressure is even higher.
Gollum Posted September 7, 2024 Posted September 7, 2024 Aus fielding used to add 40-50 runs extra to the total, still does but other teams have closed the gap. Imagine a team where Ponting isn't the number one fielder. Because they had Symonds who I regard as better than Rhodes, and the MVP in ODI cricket, all time.

It has got nothing to do with Kohli. It does not matter if anyone shares that views. Oval was flat pancake and Indian bowlers failed to defend 321 on the same ground. Ashwin not playing in ICC test finals was also the right call against Australia.

Yes, and we saw how wonderfully Umesh Yadav bowled with his 120 kph half trackers. No idea why you brought this here.

So you think bowling first in an ICC final on a flat pancake of a wicket was a perfect decision? Now remove Kohli out of the equation and read that once again to see how dumb you sound. Our famed batting lineup should have done better. That batting was non-existent after #5. India never had strong batting line up for ODIs because of lower middle order. That's why I consider Dhoni as one of the biggest change in ODI lineup. Gollum and Ultimate_Game 2

That too day match in England, no chance of dew.......almost all day matches in 2019 WC were won by team batting first because pitch used to slow down in 2nd innings. And against poyzzzz who can't handle chasing pressure in big games, then giving them two spinners to feast on after Umesh had terrorized them in the group game with his pacy short pitched stuff.

Acting know all after the fact is easiest thing to do. Kohli did not make Bumrah bowl noball either.

Jason Gillespie was also out injured?Aussies had two bowlers Lee and Mcgrath. Doesn't matter the pitch. Those two are two of the greatest bowlers ever. It's laughable to think India would have easily scored more than 300 if they batted first when the highest a team scored batting first against Australia was 248.

We managed 240 against an inferior attack on our home pitch in 2023 finals. And would have scored 300 in 2003 in SA against an ATG team Edited September 7, 2024 by Lord Laaloo and Gollum 2
zen Posted September 7, 2024 Posted September 7, 2024 No point in speculating on 2003 as that Aus team found a way to decimate Asian teams in the final: 1999 Pak 2003 Ind 2007 SL All that the fans of these 3 teams can do is devote time to think if X had happened or if y had not happened! Gollum 1
